This is an amazing device. The maps work great. Even with a small screen the maps is easy to read and also displays street names which is useful when self routing through an area. It is easy to set up and allows settings to be updated from the Garmin app or in the device. Battery life is more than enough for most adventures or the solar version can be considered for those that need more run time. I tried the latest version of the main competitor's product and this Edge 540, while not being the latest model , is hands down the winner for both the competitive and recreational cyclist.

Edge 540- One week in, all seems good, data and navigation. Paired with older sensors and new Varia radar, all working fine. Might get around to using the extra features; tracking, courses, segments, etc.

Garmin 540 edge is a must for every mountain bike ride!  Connects and tracks rides flawlessly!

Easy to use and works as expected. Price was competitive

I upgraded from  the 520, I had that for several years and it was stating to show its age, I started to look around at other bike computers but I have been using Garmin since I started riding and have been totally happy with it,  so I decided to stay with Garmin and got the 540. very impressed with the screen setup, a little bit of a learning curve with the buttons but figured it out quickly. Love the climbing feature, used it it the other day and it was pretty cool, also like how there's maps pre downloaded, while on my ride I clicked on  and showed my location with having to download it. Integrates with my iPhone 16 with no issues. All my sensors quickly connected upon start up. Like the larger screen super easy to read the fields. Overall, very impressed.

Upgraded from 520

Garmin

I had to replace my 530 (which I loved and worked perfectly well - I just lost it somehow) and found the 540 at discounted price. I preferred the old menu in the 530 - it was simple to navigate - but now that I've had the 540 for a while I'm happy with it. It's faster to turn on and off, and it's easy to connect to the other sensors and phone. It's slightly wider than the 530 but overall comfortable (it sits in between my hands as I ride exclusively in a tribike). I really like the non-touchscreen design, with side buttons, as the touchscreens tend to change page inadvertently. it happens with the side buttons as well, but not as often.

Good, compact bike computer with tons of features

I bought the Edge 540 less than a month ago, and I'm very happy with my purchase. My first real bike computer was an Edge 500, then I upgraded to and Edge 820 eight and half years ago. The battery on the 820 was by now lasting less than 3 hours and I needed to recharge the computer at rest stops during long rides LOL!. A friend told me about his 540's battery lasting for several rides and I was sold! The battery on the 540 lasts 26 hours (advertised) in intense mode and this is outstanding for me. The 540 also has a bigger screen than the 820 and it makes it easier to read. I also opted for not having a touchscreen as my experience with the 820's touchscreen was less than ideal in the wintertime while wearing gloves. I was also super pleased with the setup process. I was thinking it was going to take me over an hour to set up my screens and data for my 3 bikes, but this was not the case. The setup process imported all the profiles and screens I had on the 820 and I was ready to ride with my new computer in just a few minutes.

Great computer with long lasting battery

Bought this some time ago but had to wait to use as I suffered a cycling accident hit by a car. Now back on my bike and thoroughly enjoying the new cyclometer and all the wonderful capabilities. Easy to set up and satellite connection is flawless. Keep up the great work.

Wonderful cyclometer

I’ve had the computer for about two weeks and I still haven’t figured out how to navigate the menus which are operated using buttons on the sides. I’ve also found it confusing on how to start rides in “navigation” mode in order to both navigate the route and calculate the metrics (speed, distance, etc). While I’m getting closer to figuring this out, it’s been frustrating that it’s taken me so long. I think I’ll like it once I work out the issues, but I’m disappointed the functionality isn’t more intuitive. I like the turn-by-turn routing (since I’ve figured out how it works), but I can’t figure out how to bring the entire route into view while in this mode. I haven’t found Garmin’s online instructions very helpful, so it’s been trial by error for me. Pop-ups always seem to emerge at critical junctures on my rides, so I’ve got to figure out how to suppress these… short story - the learning curve is steep for me, I’m liking what I have figured out, and I’m hopeful I’ll like it more as I get used to it.

Challenging Functionality

The buttons and menu are confusing. Few weeks of trying to use the 540 and I still struggle with the basics (start, stop), let alone the turn-by-turn navigation (which is the only reason I wanted a bike computer). The map is also not clear at all. Also, on 2 occasions the GPS dropped so the record is missing large chunks of my ride. So now I ride with my Garmin watch again, and frankly not sure why I should bother bringing the 540 anymore. I just wish I could get turn by turn directions on my Epix or on Garmin Connect which are far superior products.
