[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm a casual cyclist already in the Garmin ecosystem with a Varia radar looking to update my 830 with something that has USB C. This was a pretty incremental upgrade, but worth it for me for the ease of charging with the USB C and also the solar charging. There's not enough solar for it to charge while using it though, just makes less battery drain. And you can't solar charge it when it's not on.

USB C and solar upgrade to 830

walmart.com

I love this. I can see the route and it even tells me when a climb is coming. With the solar it has tons of battery life. I've ridden 200 miles and it's only at 45% battery.

Love the edge 840 solar

Garmin

I bought this about a month or two ago it's worked amazing the screen is nice and bright I can easily customize the screens in the app and it's just amazing

the climb pro feature

Typical garmin, tons of functionality, took time to tailor it to my in ride needs. Way more data/ options than my previous wahoo system.

I bought to replace a Garmin 1000 which finally stopped working after about 8 - 10 years... loved that product! The Garmin 840 Solar seems ok thus far... however I think the button placement could be better. I feel like there is not a good way to turn it on without your fingers touching other buttons or not getting a good grasp of the device.

Button placement awkward

I bought this just less than two years ago.
Positives:
Turn by turn directions and screens are very helpful.
Allows music control on spotify.
Pairs nicely with my garmin varia radar/light.
When it shuts off, my light shuts off.
Mount is simple and compatible with standard garmin/other mounts.

Negatives:
Randomly stops pairing with my Garmin heart strap. Bought a new hrm and still have the same problem.
Conserving battery is really confusing and currently it will say 100% for 2hrs of a ride, and then drop to like 29%.
Solar does NOTHING to recharge it. It's pointless. I have ridden in the sun for hours and not even maintained close to the charge I started with, and haven't noticing it slowing down. Don't waste your time with the solar. Part of me thinks it actually creates issues.
Like most gramin running/biking devices, the setup of fields is complicated and not intuitive. I had to watch multiple youtube videos to figure it out, and return to them each time because it's too many steps for my small brain to retain.
With that said, Garmin is a great company and their support is usually awesome.

Ups and Downs: Solar is Pointless

I race road and track. I need a computer that basically captures power, lap power ave, cadence, HR, time, and speed. Everything else not a must need. The touch screen is a huge pain on my tt bike because the position of the computer slightly rubs my arm. Thus results in the screen changing. Also if screen is smudged if you try to wipe it off during ride screen changes. If you like a Lot of functions that are not relevant this is the computer for you.

Pain in the rear.

I loved my Garmin 840 and haven't had trouble for 3 years. But now it will never sync up with my phone. I have reset the device disconnected and reconnected the Garmin from the phone and no luck.

No longer syncs

Used a few times and returned it.
Battery not holding a charge. I would charge after the ride and next time it was 80-something percent. The following time it went from 100% to 65% between rides.
Solar charging is nearly useless. Gained less than 10 minutes on a 4 hour ride.

So bad I returned it.

I've had this device two years and it has worked adequately. Then it died on the middle of a cross-country bike tour. For a device that is supposed to be rated to help navigate in the backcountry, for it to die under such non-extreme circumstances is totally unacceptable. It had trouble managing a route navigation and heart rate data, don't trust it with your life.

Unacceptable failure
