I've had for just about 2 weeks now. I like it better than wearing my Fenix 8 to bed at night. Overall the band is comfortable to wear to sleep. Battery lasts about 5 days. I would give it 5 stars but it doesn't automatically sync in the morning to the Garmin Connect app. I have had to force push it to the app after several attempts it finally does port the data over. And then they combines with all of your other health metrics being collected by your wearable.

Better than wear the watch to bed.

Garmin

The only complaint I have is the sleep monitor makes a mark on my arm overnight and was a little uncomfortable. I did order the larger band to be safe. Regardless of how I adjust it it does put a pressure mark on my arm so I look forward to taking it off in the morning.

This is not a new device. About every 2-3 months it will not link up with Garmin Connect, and the only way I can get it back on line is to disconnect the device so it is no in Garmin Connect, then have it find the device again. I have a number of Garmin devices (computer, radar/camera/light, camera/front light, scale, blood pressure) and Garmin usually does not have this sort of problem. Battery life is also low for something from Garmin, typically 3 nights.

Not up to Garmin's usual standard!

The first thing I encountered was a big negative: I have an older model iPhone, and the Garmin Connect software will not run on it. I think it is lousy that Garmin doesn't support older versions of iOS. I had to borrow someone else's phone to do the initial set-up. Fortunately, after having done that, I can operate and manage the device without using a phone via Garmin Express on my computer and the web version of Garmin Connect. (Why couldn't Garmin allow initial set-up using the web interface of Garmin Connect?) The web version of Garmin Connect does not allow me to change settings or set alarms, but that is not a big deal for me. I'm a bit disappointed that the data that can be downloaded to a computer appears to be limited. Some data can be exported to .csv files, but not all. The raw data apparently cannot. This is a big negative for me. I would have preferred to be able to put the data into a spreadsheet rather than only being allowed to look at Garmin's plots in Garmin Connect. One big positive is that it is very comfortable and convenient to wear at night—much more so than any other type of overnight monitor I've tried. It does provide the data that I was most interested in: sleep quality. However, I have observed some inconsistent behavior: it started recording skin temperature change and HRV status after a few days of recording, but then abruptly stopped for some unknown reason. I have not been able to re-start collection of these data. Coincident with this stoppage was some clock error where the recorded sleep times were way off. Reconnecting with Garmin Connect on the phone seemed to fix the clock, but I still haven't got skin temperature or HRV data back yet.

Provides Useful Data but Has Many Shortcomings

I purchased this sleep monitor because I have a Garmin watch and one for my girlfriend. We generality like the concept of having the ability to gage the quality of our sleep and track duration, but we've had considerable frustration with the accuracy and consistency of these devices. We've found the tracking of sleep occurring when we're obviously awake as well as having the time be off by multiple hours to when we put the device on and when it said we fell asleep. We've had to reset these devices many times to try and get them to record accurately. Even when it does, we often don't get the data due to problems with the upload where we get no sleep data, dispite our stress and heart rate days showing up in our daily feed. It feels like Garmin rushed this out and didn't even want to support/ improve on the software after release. It's not worthless by any means, but as someone who owns multiple watches, bike computer, bike radar, heart straps, etc. this is by far the poorest execution of Garmin tech I own. Especially for the price. My girlfriend has recently decided she's going to buy an apple watch instead to track her sleep.

Does Garmin not even want this to be good?

It has worked most of the time for me. Manual and Garmin tutorial video are not clear as to how to use it. The tutorial says to hold your finger over the sensor to wake the device before sleep. It says, "the light will flash white to let you know it is booting, then purple and vibrate to let you know it is ready to go."

This does not happen. I have no idea how to tell if the device has started.

Most of the time it tracks sleep. Sometimes it starts itself at 3am many hours after I have fallen asleep.

It seems so odd to me that starting the device is so vague and unclear.

Difficult to know if device is working

After a couple of weeks, I'm pretty underwhelmed. I like the form factor for sleeping. My Fenix 7 has been giving me issues at night, I wake up with pins and needles in my hand sometimes. This has totally solved it, at a price:

1. The alarm has woken me up about 75% of the time. I've missed a few workouts, but haven't been late to work. Suspect I'll be really bitten by this at some point.
2. Every single morning, the morning report on my watch is missing half its data for 15 mins to an hour. Sometimes there's no sleep data. Sometimes no HRV. Sometimes neither. Losing either of these means that other morning report pages, like Training Readiness and Body Battery, are also screwed up. Note, I'm not having the "data never syncs" issues other reviews have reported. They eventually sync, but usually sometime after I've started my day. If you like/rely on the morning report on your watch, using this device for sleep data will break it.
3. You can't engage with the device's alarms unless it's paired to your phone. The device sleeps all day w/o a connection, so you can't see what alarm is set, or set a new one, unless you go to the device and wake it up. Eg - I'm sitting on the couch and realize I need to wake up early. With my watch, I'd just set an alarm. I have my phone on me, but that's useless since the device is asleep/not connected. So I have to walk upstairs, wake the device, wait for it to connect, then set an alarm. I don't know why I can't specify an alarm on my phone w/o the connection, and have it set after I grab the device before bed.
4. Similarly, if you don't sleep with your phone within reach (highly recommend), if you go to bed then realize you need to set an alarm, you have to get up and go grab your phone to set one. Don't see any way around this as it is a "configure from your phone" only device, but it's annoying.
5. I get about 7 days of battery life, which is what was advertised. But, given the size of the device, it feels crazy that it doesn't get more.
6. I've had a couple of nights where I absentmindedly put on the sleep band but forgot to take off my watch. Would be nice for the watch to give me a poke in this case. Or maybe a notification in the app?
7. Had one instance of needing to delete the device from the mobile app and re-pair it within the first two weeks. Hopefully that was a fluke, and I don't need to do that every few weeks.
8. The alarm uses 2 taps to stop, and 4 taps to snooze. I find this backwards. I snooze at least once every day, sometimes twice. Why does that take more steps?

Pros:
1. I find the band very comfortable. I've seen other people complain about it, but I suspect most of them are over tighting it. I leave it fairly loose, to the point that it can move a bit throughout the night, and this hasn't caused any issues.
2. Totally fixed the issue my watch was causing during sleep.
3. I get a 10-15 point increase in my sleep score versus my watch, lol.
4. It is very easy to sleep with. I mostly forget it's there in a way I can't with a watch.

Does it's job, but with some real drawbacks

I bought the Sleep Monitor a couple months ago, to avoid having to wear the Fenix 8 during the night.
Generally speaking the data measured seems to be accurate.
From a wearable perspective, it is a bit uncomfortable when used during the night. The band should be more flexible and the plastic buckle designed in a way that is is more comfortable.
This night the device stopped working, requiring a disconnect from Garmin Connect App and a re-connection. Of course all sleep dat was lost.

Some Issues

I've had the sleep monitor for a week - and it has not once gathered sleep data. 2/7 nights it collected heart rate - which my watch could already do. I have experimented with syncing, turning off my water, etc - nothing has worked. The sleep monitor issues are part of a larger weakness in the Garmin eco system.

I am probably a couple days from sending it back. The device should be pretty simple - gather data from a direct reading and send it to the paired phone. If you are looking for a product that does what it advertises with no hassle - this is not for you.

Whence someone figures this out - I will gladly delete this review.

Failed Product

Completely unreliable as to whether it’s going to record sleep, connect to my app to transfer information, or if an alarm is going to function, if the alarm is goi g to function the vibration even set on high is so slight I can’t depend on it to wake me up. I’ve honestly been putting my old Fitbit on as an alarm instead.

A let down

Comfortable!! You can't even tell it is there. So far, I have had it for over 2 weeks and it has already helped me understand my 24-hour information better. I am a triathlete who trains non-stop, and this has made my routine and scheduling make more sense, to make the best of my rest and my training.

Comfortable and valuable information.
