Solar charging takes longer than expected to fully charge the device.

Provides detailed fitness activity stats.

Designed for smaller wrists and compact wear.

Provides information on sleep quality and duration.

it's almost everything i want it to be, and very little else. good for mild/moderately outdoorsy people who want to track fitness and health and get basic smartwatch features without having to charge it constantly.

definitely hunt around for sale prices, especially now that it's discontinued!

fitness/backwoods usefulness:
amazing battery life. weeks if you aren't using GPS.
fitness: primarily good for cardio. wrist-based HR is not comparable to a chest strap but for an average person it seems pretty useful. can't really take into account the load of strength/lifting activities, and you probably want to use another app as your primary tracker for those.
breadcrumb navigation gives you just enough information to save points of interest and backtrack if you end up off trail; compass/etc. for supporting information. should be just enough information to get yourself unlost if you're only mildly lost, and the battery life is good enough that it will probably stay on long enough for you to do so, even with GPS.
- but since it's just a breadcrumb you can't see topo, roads, water, etc. so if you (for a totally hypothetical example, ha...) downclimb a cliff you can't get back up, it's going to be of limited helpfulness finding an alternative route.
water resistance seems good enough for anything short of diving, it can definitely handle normal submersion

screen/aesthetics/ergonomics:
great MIP screen - very readable in bright sunlight, contributes hugely to the long battery life, and i actually really like the black and white only display (less distracting)
- solar slightly reduces screen crispness and readability compared to the non-solar version and i'm not sure if it's contributing enough charge to be worth that trade-off bc it means i have to have the backlight on slightly brighter.
S size feels comfortable and looks reasonable on a small (5.5") wrist
- the silicon watch strap was sweaty and annoying, i bought an adjustable nylon strap immediately
personally i love the aesthetic, a little rugged without being too tacticool, but i'm the kind of person who wears wool socks with sandals so i'm not the most fashionable

miscellaneous:
garmin pay on the solar edition works without having your phone, great for runs etc. where you don't want to carry anything extra
i use "find my phone" all the time
  seems reasonably durable
- proprietary charging port is kinda annoying

great watch if you're the target market

walmart.com

I'm enjoying the watch. Great battery life. I track walks and hikes with watch ( I have an edge 840 for Mtb rides, my main hobby). I like all the stats available in the connect app on phone too!

Nice watch and sports tracker

Garmin

I have had the Instinct 2S Solar for about a month and I'm super glad with this purchase! I love to run, hike, raft, kayak and I feel like this watch fits perfect for my lifestyle. I love the rugged/sporty look of the watch. Also, I love the size of this watch. It doesn't look too big or too small on my wrist. 10/10.

Instinct 2S Solar

My family is working in another state. I am alone in a remote area, tending the dogs, rabbits and turkeys. If I fall or something, hopefully the emergency text function will save the day.

The Large Display and Solar function are very appealing. I keep fit without keeping track, and am able to disable power using functions. Light and comfortable, it is a good feeling to have this on the wrist.

Primarily Used For Emergency Text Capability

I'm in love with my Instinct. I love the design and the rugged look. The smaller size fits my wrist perfectly. It doesn't have the fancy touchscreen but I am 100% fine with that. I'd rather have the buttons. It has all the features I want and then some. I wear it all day and night so I can track my sleep. Love the morning report when I wake up. I run and hike a lot and it's been fabulous for that. Bonus—solar powered! Thank you Garmin!

Favorite Watch I've Owned!

My first “smart” watch, Gen Xer, and after a bit of research I'm so happy with choosing Garmin! I looked at a few other name brands and they have the watch that I was looking for. Very easy to use, hardly needs to charge with the solar capability, not pretentiously large, great app, tech that pertains to me and skips the noise - oh and military grade rugged. I upload the health metrics to ai and it helps me to stay on track. I've been using now for just under a month and I'm very happy with my purchase.

Garmin Instinct 2 Solar

I rocked the previous edition Instinct Solar for over a year and absolutely loved it. My only drawback was its size having a smaller wrist. Switching to the 2S, the watch just feels so much more comfortable and fits me better. I was already use to the interface and app which I love.

Perfect size & features

I bought the Instinct 2S Solar several weeks ago and am still fumbling through settings on the watch! The small brochure that came with it was of little help. I had to watch some YouTube videos to set some of the less basic settings. Not intuitively designed!

The other issue is the tiny script. I'm a young 60 and wear readers, but not in the pool- some tweaks to background lighting and increases font size would be helpful. While I know there is a learning curve, I am generally a quick study. This watch is a bit frustrating, hence the 4/5 stars!! Could also be some glare on the watch face. Visibility is my main issue.

Poor readability.

The watch doesn't have a good battery life. If your tied to an office or nights for a majority of your day go another route. If you don't want to see all the features shut off allows for more life. Not something I was expecting g from a solar charge watch. Features are good and easy to use.

Lacks Life.

I received my Instinct 2S Solar today. I have had it on charge for 3 hours. I have followed all tutorials, hard resetting it, etc. The watch is faulty from the onset and I am so disappointed. I would never expect a totally defective watch to pass through Garmin as I would expect there to be quality control measures and testing in place prior to packaging.

Does not switch on

Garmin Instinct 2S Rugged GPS Smartwatch and Fitness Tracker with Solar Charging in black, 3/4 front view showing monochrome digital display with time, date, battery life, and solar charge indicator, featuring a shock-resistant fiber-reinforced polymer case and vented silicone strap, water-rated to 100 meters, ideal for outdoor fitness and daily activity tracking.
