Great Lie DVD -  Bette Davis was at the top of her game when she starred in this soap opera-like drama by director Edmund Goulding. (Goulding had already proven himself a good director for Davis with THE OLD MAID and DARK VICTORY, though legend has it they fought like crazy during filming). As Maggie Patterson, Davis is a spritely southern belle in charge of a fertile plantation, and in love with a boozy, irresponsible pilot, Peter Van Allen (George Brent). However, she's competing for his hand with a glitzy New York rival, Sandra Kovac (Mary Astor). Maggie eventually wins Peter as a husband, but Sandra winds up pregnant with his child. When his plane goes down over the Amazon and he's presumed dead, the two decide to make a deal where Sandra has the baby in secret and Maggie pretends the child is her own. Of course all bets are off when Peter suddenly shows up. The result is a classy, cocktail and conversation melodrama, made sublime by the wonderfully bitchy dueling between Davis and Astor.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] A v. good movie, but most certainly an UNUSUAL movie for Bette Davis as she plays a very nice woman; in this one, it's left to Mary Astor to play the self-centered, conniving and generally horrible person! 

The story centers on 3 people: George Brett (Peter), Mary Astor (Sandra) and Bette Davis (Maggie). In a compulsive alcoholic stupor Peter and Sandra get married. Sandra is a famous concert pianist, and Peter is an entrpeneurial aviator/businessman. Shortly after they are married it is learned that their marriage was not legal because Sandra failed to get a completely legal divorce from her previous husband. 

Freed of his relationship with Sandra, Peter and Maggie get married. Shortly thereafter, Peter goes on a business trip to South America, but his plane disappears in the Amazon jungle, and he is assumed to be dead. And now it gets interesting: 

Sandra discovers she is pregnant (by Peter) in a union just prior to his marriage to Maggie. Maggie proposes that she and Sandra move to a remote location in Arizona where Sandra can bear her child privately. Sandra accepts, and off they go to Arizona - where Sandra shows her ugly selfish side repeatedly trying Maggie's patience. However, Maggie perseveres, the child is born and both women return to "civilization": Maggie with the child, and Sandra to resume her career. 

In the next phase of the story, Peter is found in the Amazon, and returns to Maggie. Sandra becomes jealous, and tries to use her motherhood to break up Peter and Maggie's marriage. When Peter learns of her plot, he tells her that she may take the child, but he is staying with Maggie. Sandra makes clear her true motives when she declares she does not really want the child, and admits that Maggie and Peter offer a better home for the child to be raised. She leaves (good riddance :) 

Apparently Bette Davis was influenced to take this role due to the volume of fan mail suggesting she play a "nice" character (for a change!). Ms. Davis campaigned hard for Mary Astor to get the role of Sandra, and had to overcome resistance to the casting from Warner Bros. management. She finally won that argument - a decision that seems to have worked out for the best... Mary Astor was an accomplished pianist, and she won the Oscar that year for Best Supporting Actress. However, it is not Mary Astor you hear playing the piano - it is Max Rabinovitch... Ms. Astor's piano was a "dummy". Nevertheless, her experience and training as a pianist served to make these scenes very realistic.
