About This Item HTH® pH Decreaser helps balance pH levels in swimming pool water, improving both the quality of the water and the comfort of your swimmers. pH Decreaser not only ensures that your chlorine is working more efficiently, but it helps prevent scale formation on pool surfaces and equipment as well as significantly reduces skin and eye irritation. How to Use HTH® pH Decreaser Use HTH® 6-Way Test Strips or Test Kit to test your water weekly to make sure the pH level is between 7.2 and 7.8 ppm. If the pH measures above 7.8, add HTH® pH Down directly to the pool water to decrease the pH. Swimming can resume immediately after treatment. It works, but the recommended amount on the back of the package doesn't give an indication of how much it is expected to decrease the PH.  We discovered the amount required for the volume of our pool (yes I did the calculation) only lowers it by 0.1 or 0.2, so you may need to double or triple the dose to get it back into balance (or low enough - in the ideal range - that you don't have to worry about the natural rise in PH that happens, for a little while).
