My horse had his shoes pulled about mid November, and after having shoes on for a while, his hooves were "ouchy." Thanks to Hawthorne's Venice Turpentine my horse's hooves got much tougher. All I did was apply this to the soles of his hooves every other day and soon enough, my horse could walk on gravel easily.

Helps Toughen Hooves

I have never used a product this thick and so time will tell if it helps my tender foot.  I keep a small bucket of fine shavings near when I use this, because it helps to keep the foot clean.  I paint on the thick (sticky, so wear gloves) ointment and then pack a handful of the clean shavings onto bottom of hoof.  I'd rather that than walk him back to his stall through the mud and whatnot that will stick onto the turpentine.  So far his feet seem good but it will take time to see long term if it helps with his feet and occasional tenderness.  I have a thin soled OTTB, barefoot, as he can't handle shoes or keep them on and so I boot him when I ride.

I've been using this for about a month now since I've pulled my horses shoes for the winter and she's had no foot soreness. I believe a great deal of this is from the product. I started applying once a day, 2 weeks before her shoes were pulled and then for a little over a week after. In case anyone was wondering, the product is super sticky and can cause a small mess. However, it works so I can deal with the stickiness.

Definitely Helps!

Hawthorne Venice Turpentine has been my go-to product for sore soles for as long as I can remember. My current mare is a TBx and she inherited the sensitive TB hooves. While she has great growth, she has thin soles that can be prone to sensitivity, especially on dry, rocky ground. I will put this on the soles of her hoof, including the bulbs and frog, after a hard schooling ride, after a trail ride, or even when my ring has been dry for too many days in a row. While the product is on the stickier side, I find that wiping down the brush applicator before putting it away, prolongs the use. This helps to clear any sand or dirt I may have missed that got attached to the brush applicator before sealing it closed.

The best for sensitive soles!

I just ordered this, so it hasn't arrived yet. However, my barn is having issues at the moment with soft soles on numerous horses. Along with applying iodine, this turpentine is our “go to!” It's working very well on toughening up the soles! I've looked at other local shops and they want an arm and a leg for turpentine. Thanks, SmartPak, for making this affordable to save our soles!

Just what the barn needed!

Our rescue gelding suffered hoof neglect for the first 5 years of his life. We were told that he was pasture sound unless the ground became frozen. When it did he could only walk one foot at a time and was very sore. As soon as we received our package from Smartpak we began applying this product and saw improvement within days.  He is still careful when the ground is frozen, but walks freely and is back to his usual cheerful and outgoing disposition. Thank you Smartpak for your fast shipping. It made a huge difference for our boy.

Works Great!

My mares soles started appearing soft after two weeks of persistent rain. On the recommendation of my trainer I bought the Venice Turpentine to try and help toughen her soles. After two applications her feet appear so much healthier and stronger. I only use this 2-3 times a week to avoid too much of a good thing. This has become a new staple in my grooming kit. 

I do recommend cleaning off the cap before sealing. I have managed several times to "glue" the cap onto the bottle which is remedied by running the container under hot water.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was exactly what I was looking for. I thought it was a bit expensive, considering I found it for 20% less after I purchased it. It is very sticky. I like that it has the brush built into the lid. Tip: Wipe the lid before sealing or it will be tough to get off. I used this for my Quarter Horse who has bruised hooves in front. Too soon to tell if it is working, but I have high hopes. It seems to be the same stuff I used on another horse many years ago and it worked to toughen up the toes. I do not let this get in the frog, I just put it on the sole. Try to work in a clean area and use a paper cut out before you let him put his foot down or it will just pack with dirt %26 sand.
