The only thing attaching the back to the seat are the arms, and squeezing the back into place in order to attach it with bolts was difficult by myself - having an assistant would have helped a lot. The holes the screws have to reach are beneath the outer layer of cushion on the sides of the back piece, and you have to squeeze the cushion surface down a bit in order for the screws to make it in. (They should have just made longer screws.) As a result the back is not able to tilt back independently, but the chair as a whole (back + seat) does, and this was enough to make it comfortable for me. So the positions are not as customizable as other desk chairs.
The picture doesn't make this clear, but the main surface contacting your body on the back and seat is ventilated. It feels like the same material as the adjacent parts which are smooth. Very supple but probably not real tear-resistant, so I wouldn't recommend this for kids.
Also, the arms have a nice cushion layer on top (the black part).
Looks great from all angles. I love that it looks like it could have come from the set of a sci-fi movie (starship bridge furnishings, maybe).
