My grandson and I enjoyed doing this.  He is 3 1/2 years old and loved it because he could hear Ace talk when he got it right.  Very inventive for kids to learn.

Excellent learning tool.

I have struggled for months to teach my daughter the alphabet and entice her to learn. Luckily, that all changed when this Hot Dots set arrived! She immediately took to it and went through both books in the first sitting. She continues to ask for these books and loves to go through them. I love watching her improve and FINALLY enjoying learning!

Interactive Learning at its Best!

I have 5 year old twin boy and we own a few other Hot Dots Jr sets but this one seems to be their favorite! The interactive pen, "Ace", is adorable. My kids love using him! And he can be used with the other sets too, which is great! (Although "Ollie" the talking Owl is another adorable pen that comes with the other sets, making the choice of which to use quite difficult for a child. Ha!) I am very pleased with the quality of the box. It is very durable and has a strong handle allowing it to be carried and stacked by the kiddos without getting easily destroyed. The two spiral bound books are also durable and laminated. They are very nicely laid out with colorful pages and just the right amount of content on each page. My kids have enjoyed working through the pages of both books. I really like how the books progress in skills. It allows my boys to have fun while learning but also challenges them without getting frustrated. Because of their age and their lack of ability to read the instructions themselves, I did have to guide them through the activities the first few times that they used the books. In my opinion, it was just another way for me to monitor what they could do and keep track of their progress.

A great way to introduce Math skills

My grandson is 2 1/2 and I purchased the Phonics, PreK Math and Reading Kits. I wasn't sure he was old enough yet, or would be interested at all, but thought we would try them as playing cars and trucks on a daily basis gets old for Grammy fast. He is a slow talker, but his motor skills are keen, so he was able to hold dog pen straight up and pin point the black dot he chose for his answers. At first he was mostly interested in touching every dot with the pen,But when hearing the dog speak, bark, and carry on he waas correct with answer delighted and got the idea. Because I hope he finds learning fun, we don't use these books and flash cards unless he request, as he is so young. His favorite is the math pre K espically the time story sequence. These are a great addition to supervised playtime for parents and caregivers, I am very pleased with my purchase.

I received Hot Dots Jr. Let's Master Pre-K Math free for review. All opinions are my own.

Hot Dots Jr. Let's Master Pre-K Math includes Ace the Talking Teaching Dog Hot Dots Pen and two Hot Dots workbooks. The workbooks include questions, and multiple choice answers with a black dot next to each possible response. Your child will use the Hot Dots pen to select an answer by vertically pressing down on one of the dots. If the answer is correct a positive reinforcement will be heard and the pen will light up green. If the answer is wrong, a try again message will sound and the pen will light up red. The Pre-K Math books cover topics such as counting, patterns, time, shapes, fractions, measurements and basic math facts. 

Both Pre-K Math Book 1 and Book 2 were pretty easy for my 4 year old. She had to spend time thinking about things before answering. The questions are read by an adult to her, and she was able to answer questions with few mistakes, but because she concentrated so much on it, I knew it was the perfect level for her to really work on mastering these skills. She loves the Ace pen and we also love that it can be used with any of the Hot Dots sets. 

Overall this is a great supplemental kit for teaching kids math. The pages are durable and made to last through repeated use. These books can be used as a teaching tool and as a review for previous concepts to reinforce those ideas. I recommend this kit to anyone with a preschool aged child. It's a great introduction to math for them.

My girls are loving the Hot Dots Jr. sets! We have the Pre-K Reading and Math and I already know we will be buying the more advanced levels when they are ready! My girls are 3 1/2 and almost 2, so we will be using these sets to keep them up to speed (or ahead) for school. Pros: The activities seem pretty on target in this one for the Pre-K level. The spiral binding on the book was a amazing idea and the fun, colorful pictures keep them entertained. They love the puppy pens! It is so cool that it tells you if you are right or wrong, but also his eyes light up red or green, which they think is awesome. The activities seem pretty on target in this one for the Pre-K level. Many fun activities for them to do. I hear Ace barking away right now! Cons: Well I thought I was going to have to put that the pen is a "boy" pen and they would love to have a "girl" one...but then I saw that you can purchase Kat, a purple cat pen, or there is a fairy tale set that comes with a wand...so I guess I will put that as half a con since I will probably need to make another purchase. :) I would say that the price seems a little bit high, but I know we will get a lot of use out of them as long as the pens keep working! It needs an On/Off switch.

Wonderful set! Fun & Educational

I received the Hot Dots Jr. Pre-K Math set from Educational Insights for review purposes. My 4 11/12 year old has used Hot Dots before; she has both pens (Ace & Kat), two of the Interactive Storybooks, and a Phonics set. She was very excited to begin the Math work because she loves to work with numbers. Let me begin with one tip for parents and educators: this program requires adult (or literate child) guidance. There are specific instructions throughout the two books that assist the child in choosing the correct answer(s). And sometimes, the instructions are opposite to a similarly-formatted question the child may have encountered in a previous lesson. Let's Master Pre-K Math is NOT a self-directed exercise for your child, unless of course, (s)he is reading proficiently. My child enjoyed working through the well-crafted, spiral bound books. She loves the talking pen and has come to understand, through trial and error, that using it carefully and correctly really does matter. (There are specific instructions for use in the box.) I like the objectivity of the pen: Mom or Dad isn't the one telling you whether your answer is right or wrong. Granted, the phrases and buzzing get a tad annoying for an adult, but my kid really loves the self-correction that Ace provides. The lessons range from one-to-one correspondence to number symbol identification, with introductions to plane shapes, fractions, time, measurement, and sequencing & patterns. The content would be best suited to 3-4 year olds. The box states 4+, but my 4 11/12 year old (still a preschooler as she cannot enter K until next year according to our state) made her way through both books in under an hour, with few mistakes. The kind of parent who would purchase this for their child has probably introduced their child to other educational concepts and materials, so I might suggest ordering the next level up. My daughter's favorite exercise was actually the last challenge question, wherein you are asked to choose the correct quantity of ladybugs (there are 100). She initially used her powers of deduction to rule out the first 2 much smaller sums, then wanted to count each ladybug individually to make SURE there were 100. The inclusion of the pen is great, but if you purchase more than one set (I think the Pre-K Reading would be good to use in tandem), you have multiple pens that really don't have any additional functions outside the Hot Dots materials. I would have liked to see the set include some kind of rote counting number line that might reinforce the most basic math skills. Solid B+

We just opened this after being a reward for using the potty. The pen keeps giving an incorrect sound/phrase no matter which dot you touch. Not a good sign for this company's products as this is the first we have purchased.

Did not work right out of the box.
