This is actually a really cool toy. Bought for a friend who's boy is 8. He loves it as did all us adults. It's extremely fast on the ground then lifts off for flight. Even with a crash or two it is built to take a beating.

Really Cool!!!

I was reluctant to buy this toy because usually they break. This toy is AMAZING! My 12 year old son LOVES it. It actually works and drives easily. You do need to have virtually no wind for it to fly properly but I would DEFINITELY recommend this toy!

You're not going to buy this radio controlled toy to use as a car only. We've had those and as a stand alone rc car it is, well...blah. It lacks the maneuverability, power, and traction of a remote controlled car. But, it's not meant to be a fantastic rc car. It's a hybrid. Though, as a rc plane it is great! My son and husband have had 2 Syma's, 1 Air Hogs, 1 Extreme rc helicopters, and still have an Ember 2 RTF plane. Every one of those was more fragile than this Hot Wheels Street Hawk Remote Control Flying Car.

Before it's maiden flight, my son put it into "plane" mode and started it up, a propeller flew off and we couldn't find it. We were at the park and didn't' take the 2 spare propellers with us. So, he just used it in blah mode. The next day the weather cooperated, we took it back out for a spin. For my son and husband who have used rc toys before, it was easy to control, but my husband's flight was smoother and straighter. He's particular about aircraft flight (yawn).

When the battery runs low, we just charge it from the remote control while my son plays in the park. 30-40 minutes later, back to a short flight time of about 5 minutes. It has survived one small crash and seems very durable for this type of toy. We have a box full of inoperable helicopters, but only this one and the Ember 2 RTF are still up and running. Understand this is foam. Only light material will fly.
The product was provided free from Mattel for me and my family to review. Good job Mattel.

Compared to other RC planes & helicopters

We received this product free from Mattel for review. My nine year old son and I were so excited! A flying car! Great idea! When the item arrived we were a little cautious at first because it does look and feel flimsy. We charged it for about three hours (it only calls for 40 minutes, but we wanted to give it plenty of time), being very careful with the charging wire that goes from the plane into the control. It IS very fragile.
After charging, we took 'er out! The controller is very easy to use, even my three year old daughter drove it. It would be nicer if there were a reverse option, but none the less, simple to use. In drive mode, it was VERY fast, fun to control and an all around blast to drive. We did have issues with it suddenly just wanting to drive to one side over and over, which is when we would stop driving it. It took a beating and kept on though! This little creation that looked flimsy is ANYTHING BUT!
In fly mode, it was another story. So far, only I have been able to get it to take flight. However, after about 2 seconds it banks to one side and crashes. We have not been able to get it to do anything in the air. This was a serious let down as this is what the product was supposed to be such a rave about. Battery life is about 5 minutes - wish it were longer.
All in all, it is tough, is great in drive mode, but fly mode just didn't make the cut. It is fun for all ages, but wish there was an improvement to the flying ability.

Fast, fun and tough but...

I had the pleasure of trying out the street hawk rc racer for free from hot wheels. As a promotion from hot wheels. My son was super excited to receive this toy. You might want to know it takes 6 AA batteries not included so make sure you get those with your purchase. It does come with a couple extra propellers. It does need charged prior to playing with it. The cord that attaches from the plane to the controller is inside the controller, there is a white piece that lifts up. It took us a minute to find it. After the street hawk is fully charged then you are ready to go. Make sure you look over the control options and learn which way goes where. There is only about 5-6 minutes of play time per charge. That is the down fall and why I gave the RC a 3 start rating. It is fun and neat to play with but about the time you get into it and know what you are doing the street hawk needs charged again and it take 4 hours per charge. So I think that the price is a little pricey for no more play time you get. That is a real bummer to have to wait so long before you can play. If you have more then one kid or person that wants to play then you are kind of out of luck until next charge. It is durable when it crashes I wouldn't recommend it on purpose but if it does happen it can hold up. When I first took it out of the package I thought it would be something that broke fast but my son is 13 and it is still holding strong. It will fly high in the sky and then you can switch the switch and drive it on the ground. Though it only drives on pavement and not in grass. Make sure you have plenty of area to fly the street hawk because it is fun to loop up and around it's great turning and zooming around. I would recommend this to a friend but make sure they know the play to charge ratio first. It is a durable toy that is attractive and fun. It will draw a crowd.

Hot wheels hawk street racer

At first I was very skeptical about this particular product, because it was so light weight. My first thought was "my son will have this broke within thirty minutes. But, apparently, I was very wrong! My son has been playing with it for hours now, and it has survived many crash landings. My 8 year old son had a hard time getting dad to hand the toy over. my son was able to learn the controls very quickly, and it transitions very easily from air to ground. My only complaint would be that the company should add some hard plastic to the nose of the plane because it does take quite a few nose dives, there are some bumps from the nose dives but nothing terrible. I feel that over time the nose will wear down a bit. Other than that, it is very durable, fun, and a great gift for the kids! Thanks Mattel for allowing me to try your product for FREE!

Great gift for kids!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this from the manufacturer to try out and boy was I surprised! I thought this was going to be another big disappointing RC vehicle. I was very wrong!

We love this!! It's so much fun! I highly recommend! Compared to the expensive flying helicopters we've tried, this is much easier to use! I would purchase this for gifts too.

It's labeled for ages 8 and up. Though I would not put it in the child's care for charging and storage. As it has a very thin cord to connect the car to the controller for charging. It wouldn't take much to rip this small wire or it's tiny connector out of the unit itself. It's very lightweight. Made of a durable styrofoam, but could be easily broken.

It took us a little while to figure out how to make it fly going from the car setting to the fly setting. I HIGHLY recommend a paved or concrete area. It won't work on grass. But once you get the hang of the controls, it's SO much fun. We also figured out that we could put it in fly mode and lightly toss it up and forward (like a paper airplane), an get maximum height and air time.

What a great surprise!

It was really exciting watching my kids take turns driving it around, when all of a sudden it takes off up in the air! And I mean it went real high. I just have to mention, this is a one-of-a-kind toy. I've never seen anything else like it. It would make the perfect gift. My kids love playing with it so much, they don't even bother with their other toys. It keeps them entertained for hours.

BEST TOY EVER!!!

The toy really works. we placed it on the ground and it rode really fast then it took off in the air. It was definitely cool. The only thing that was bad was when it died and we tried to charge it the toy would not hold a charge.

It Really works

My 12 year old son received this free from Mattel. He likes the look of the car and found it fun to play with at first. It's very lightweight. The remote control was easy for him to work. He made a few adjustments to get the car to drive straight. It was easy for him (12yr) to make the needed adjustment, but thinking it may be tricky for younger kids. It's better to use this outside for flying and needs to drive a bit first before it will take off. Doesn't work well on grass, so we drove it on the sidewalk and later in a tennis court which was a great flat surface for driving. Once in the air, you need to get the hang of flying, which took him several tries. It's touch to steer once airborne. The car is durable and survives crashes pretty well. The one thing he doesn't like was that there is no reverse. He would've liked to have been able to to reverse it when it was stuck face first somewhere. Since you can't back it up, you have to walk over and pick it up, which he didn't like. Otherwise durable, fun toy.

Good, but...

i got the hot wheels street hawk from bzzagent to try out..we charged it for 2 hours,then tried it out..it lasted maybe around 2 mins before the green light started blinking and car would not move.so we charged it overnight..took it outside to the road,in car mode its really fast,no reverse makes it a pain to have to go get your car everytime. in plane mode its really hard to get lift off and even harder to get it to stay in the air.stays in air maybe 3 seconds before it takes a nose dive!! and the noise is very loud!!.charge time: took me longer to walk out the door and down to the road then it took to play with this thing..2 mins into fight time and it was blinking again..my kids are girl 17,and boys are 12 and 16 yrs old and all 3 of them are no longer interested in this toy..i am so glad i got this free to try for i would not be a happy camper to dish out $50 for something that is not very good...and the 40 min charge time??? not worth it!! i wonder how many of these things get returned!!
