Amazing

I just received my speaker yesterday and played it all night. That speaker is a beast. I have owned a JBL party box 300 and it's no comparison to this speaker. The sound is crisp and distinct. I recommend this party box with no reservations

Great features and sound

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] OK, this is a BIG speaker, with a BIG sound. If you have heard, or own, any JBL products you know that GREAT JBL bass sound and the PartyBox 520 has the same sound. It WILL fill big spaces, like a pool or deck area.  It would also be great to have in a party room or for a yard party. Operation and connection, using Bluetooth, are simple; it uses the same sound effects as other JBL products to confirm things, including Bluetooth connection.  When those itty-bitty speakers say that they “have a big sound….” THIS is the sound they are talking about.  That said, it also performed wonderfully at lower (living room) levels for me. It would also be great as amplification for a podium Microphone or two.  There are two XLR inputs, one for Line in, on the back with adapters for Stereo plugs…. perfect for an instrument and microphone if you are a performer on a Patio or medium size club space.  It also takes USB-C and a mini-plug Aux input.  On top are controls for Microphone input, including bass, treble and echo.  According to the specs, the Party Box 520 is ‘Splash-proof'.  It's powered by a JBL battery that is replaceable, it takes about 3 hours to charge, also according to the specs. Mine was 50% charged when delivered and I charged it overnight before use.     

First Thing: I strongly encourage getting the App for control of the PartyBox. There are features in the app which allow customization, including a seven band Equalizer with other presets and different types of Bass Response. The App is also the only way to update the speaker's firmware, something my app did automatically on the first connection.  I presume that JBL will update firmware, and the app, as different options are enabled. 
Effects Lab in the app is where the sound effects originate; one time per push.  The app allows customization of three separate Sounds that play from buttons on top of the speaker. All the lighting settings are on the app, and it's the same thing, you can set up your faves to play via controls on top of the speaker.  It's also possible to turn all the lighting off if needed, via the app. 
All this BIG sound, Big Control and BIG fun comes in a relatively big package, as tall as the average 4-year-old, and heavier. There is a pop-up handle and wheels for portability. If you want to lift it, I suggest getting a partner. But for someone like a music therapist who travels within a building, it would be great. 
Let's get some actual usage.  The JBL Party Box 520 is perfect for a pool or deck party, including music performances and/or Karaoke. Included with the sound effects are a few record scratches to use and some encouragement shoutouts.  My favorite sound effect is the applause… I have that programmed into the “Thumbs Up” button on top so I can congratulate my kids after they sing.  The lighting effects are great for a night-time yard party. Recently, I observed a Party Box in use as the primary sound system for a gym sized room and it was just fine - that bass really carries the sound.

BIG Sound BIG Package!

The excitement this speaker brings is infectious. I hadn't even taken delivery yet, and when this turned up at the door, the delivery driver was telling me how much fun I'm going to have and how amazing it's going to sound, just from seeing the box.

You need ample space and a bit of muscle just to wrestle it out of the box, but once set up, it is a thing of beauty.

I won't go through the individual inputs and technical specifications, as you can easily read the list. What I will say is that inputs and buttons feel excellent quality, and the small light inside the input panel is incredibly thoughtful. I've hooked up DJ controllers, microphones etc with no issues. I do feel like the sound effect buttons are wasted real estate and can even be frustrating if people keep pressing them at parties due to the easy access. They could stay hidden away inside the app and be replaced with more access to fine-tuning the lighting, or EQ selections.

I would call myself an audiophile, but I don't go to extreme lengths to achieve perfection and prefer not to have to purchase separate amps and build a full setup. I really appreciate the portability of this speaker. Whilst I'd normally walk around with a set of Audeze headphones, I've found myself wheeling the 520 into different areas of my house and garden, and the kids usually follow and have a bit of a rave. The sound quality is exceptional, and becomes noticeably louder when powered by the mains. I've had no issues with battery life and feel it's likely it will easily surpass 12 hours at the volume levels I've been using. 

In very large rooms, the sound can get a bit 'lost'. If you try to counter this by increasing the volume to nearly maximum, you do lose some of the power of the bass. I'd suggest that this speaker is used in combination with other JBL partybox products, or even another 520 depending on your setup in large rooms. In the open air, you do have to position yourself in the right place to make the most of the bass and sound staging, but that's not a knock on the product as it's not a full PA system. It's definitely powerful enough for pool parties and the like.

I've not found myself reaching for the EQ adjustment on the app, which is unusual for me. I've listened to a wide range of electronic music, rock, metal and epic/classical during my testing. The highs sound crisp and not overbearing, the mids are visible and beautiful, and the lows are powerful and moving. The only adjustment I've made between genres is the bass boost. Some genres feel fine at 0 (and I frequently used this if I didn't want to upset the neighbours), at 1 the bass is a deeper pounding and I thought this would be my go-to, however I often set it to 2 and enjoy the more powerful punchy feeling through my body. If I'm directly in front of the speaker and close my eyes, it does feel like I'm in front of a PA system at a festival. In fact, I prefer the sound stage of this speaker to this year's Creamfields. I would say it'd save money just to stay at home, but that brings me to my final topic: the price.

I'm not completely certain where in the market this speaker sits at it's RRP. It's too expensive and cumbersome for something you'll want to have sitting around at home using sporadically, and the 710 is on sale for around the same price which I think better suits a more 'professional' setup for a DJ or party provider. The main benefit of the 520 over the 710 is the ability to be fully powered by battery. If money is no object, and you have the space to own one or multiple of these speakers, then I think you'd struggle to find the same sound performance, and it's definitely impossible to find the same portability. 

I believe that the 320 is even overkill for most homes, which makes the 520 a delightfully stupid purchase that I personally wouldn't regret as long as I could afford it!

I received this speaker in exchange for my honest review and it's absolutely amazing. The sound quality is fantastic and so clear . I must add it's bigger than you actually think and quite heavy to but don't let that put you off how good it actually sounds. The light show is a nice added extra which can be switched off if you require and the app you can download with the speaker is so easy to use and offers a load more options for the speaker
