Rod not functional.  Had to remove rubber end  tip to extend  and pull out spring to desired width, then try to push spring back inside metal outer shell to match the desired width of door frame then replace flimsy rubber end cap.  If not being extremely careful while trying to reinsert spring would have been cut by either tension spring end coil or metal sharp edge rod.  NOT RECOMMENDED.DISSATISFIED
