[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This face does have a revitalizing feeling to it. It worse 2x as good when you use a electronic facial scrub. Walmart has the cheapest price around for this size by far. Would recommend

Refreshing on the wake up

What a disappointment.
This used to be a genuinely premium cleanser: rich, creamy lather, a distinctive scent, and reliably clean skin without any dryness. The “new formula” is not an improvement — it's a completely different, noticeably inferior product.
If the change was made for environmental reasons, then say so. But don't pretend this is the same cleanser. It now produces almost no lather, has virtually no scent other than a faint chemical note, and the watery, fast-vanishing foam no longer cleans effectively. It feels like washing with plain water.
What makes this worse are the scripted, robotic responses from Kiehl's HQ pretending to be shocked and saddened by yet another unhappy customer. They add nothing except frustration.
Please either restore the original formula or be straightforward: rename the product, redesign the bottle, and promote the environmental benefits instead of claiming qualities this version simply doesn't have.  You might as well use watered down washing up liquid and refill your now empty Kiehls bottle.  Job done and money saved.

I've been using the kiehls facial fuel face wash and moisturiser for over 10 years and recently purchased a new supply with the new formula. Absolutely disappointing. For years the lather and thickness of the facial wash was great and my go to face wash however the new formula is watery smells like detergent and does not lather at all. You've lost me as a customer and I won't be using the products any further. You've really ruined a good product and I'm sure your customers are leaving. Reddit shows many disappointed people. Why change something that's not broken? Unless you're doing this for bottom line and profit?!

I've been using this stuff for very many years. A couple of days ago I started a new bottle and noticed big changes. The smell is different, which is fine but it also seems watered down; it doesn't lather properly; I feel that it's not cleaning. I then have a quick look online and surprise! many others are saying the same thing.

I know that e.g. chocolate bars are getting smaller as a way of disguising price increases. I'm suspicious that something similar is happening with Facial Fuel: more water than face wash.

I'll probably ditch Kiehl's when it runs out and try something new, which is annoying as I've happy with Facial Fuel for so many years. I use Malin & Goetz moisturisers; I'll try their face wash.

P.S. just did another search: yes, many others (e.g. on Reddit) have said this is now watery. Once your loyal customers leave and find a new fave, their gone forever.

Watered down?

The new formula has ruined what once was a great product. The marketing team reply some stuff about it ‘being the same product but plant based', but it really isn't. It does not lather, is not a gel, does not clean and the smell is horrendous. Sadly will find a non-L'Oréal alternative after a decade of using the old better formula.

Ruined by new formula

I've been using this for 15 years and thought my latest bottle must have been from a bad batch, until I read the other reviews here. The reformulation has ruined this product - it no longer lathers well, it's hard to rinse off and it smells harsh. I used to feel squeaky clean and fresh after using this and I no longer do - sadly I bought a 1l bottle which I'll now have to use up as it's expensive, but I won't be buying it again.

Been using this for years, however just opened a new bottle and its obvious that the formula is changed without making it clear on the bottle. It now has a bad smell and doesn't lather up at all, too early to tell if it has any different affect on my skin. I want to warn anyone else expecting the product that they know and love that it has changed big time.

Warning - formula has changed sometime in 2025.

This product has been my staple cleanser for years and made me forget I had sensitive combination skin, which is why I'm sad to say I am looking for a new staple as I type this. After my 1L bottle started to run out recently I purchased a 250ml replacement (1L out of stock everywhere for some reason). I have used it a few times now and confident the formula has been changed. I notice the new formula is working for some, but it's definitely not working for my skin—my face no longer feels clean after washes. I have been using double the amount of cleanser I would normally use thinking I wasn't using enough product for it to properly foam and give my face the squeaky clean feel I am used to, but it is clear now that the product has changed. No amount of product cleanses my face the way it used to. Small thing but I noticed the new bottles say “revitalising” instead of “energising” now, which, again, suggests the formula has been changed.

Time to find a new staple sadly.
