Detectives Office being the 10th model in the modular range has to be one of my faves. Allot of detail doesn't disappoint. Assembling is pretty straight forward with some new advanced building techniques. My favourite would have to be the pool table, very clever. A great addition to any collection

I spy with my little eye

LEGO

As so many before me, I was a lego fanatic as a child. When the teens attacked me from behind, such childish things had to go. Now, all grown up, I have some problems with depression and needed something to occupy my mind. I found out that I still loved lego and this is my second set this far. It was a blast to build and it is beautifully. I draged it out over a couple of days to make it last. It wasn't difficult to build, just need to take the time.
Everything in the model is so cozy and nice. It sooths my mind and keeps the depression at bay. I'm definitely going to keep using this medicine and plan to buy all the modular models when I can afford it. . This models is so detailed and nice that I actually fantasize that I live there when the daylie life gets tough. I sure can recomend this model, and lego generally, if you need something to take the edge of a hard life. The minifigs becomes your friends :)

Lego = Peace of mind

This is a marvelous Lego set. I received the Detectives Office with the Brick Bank during the Christmas period. It was fascinating to compare the structures. I think that The Highlander (the pool club) is my personal favourite room of the set. It's also the most spacious. The floor design is exquisite, along with the pool table and overhead fan! Great details. The Office for Ace Brickman is packed with superb little features: his desk, the guest chair, the fan, hat-stand, locker. His lamp is incredibly authentic, but I keep knocking it over with my hand! Al's Barbershop has a wonderful colour scheme to it, but really difficult to access in a pragmatic sense: uber-high walls and a narrow room. The toilet on the floor above is also designed and placed perfectly. 

The roof was a crazy construction, in a good way. It has quite a strange build technique. Quite bizarre, but looks good. Likewise the water tower: a peculiar contraption to build, but does look genuine. I had good fun with that.

All-in-all, a really great, fascinating set that I can't recommend highly enough!

My first substantial Lego set in 18 years.

I'm new to modular builds, and after starting with Assembly Square, this was the next must-have.
As this set took shape I kept finding myself smiling at the ingenious combination of elements to create features that make it fantastic; the pool table, the detectives desk, his antique lamp and the water tower to name just a few features.
The addition of barber shop sign as well the stickers on the 'glass' windows gives each part of the set its own character.
Other reviewers have commented on the limited space inside Al's barbers, but to be honest this isn't an issue for me as it is more of a display piece than something to go inside and keep altering positions of the minifigures.
My only concern is for the detective in his office. If he leans on his window, I can see him falling to the ground (unless I have managed to obtain a one of a kind window design - see images)
The whole process of creating these builds is addictive. I bought this (and Assembly Square) in order to build a small amount each week as a way to relax. This hasn't worked, as once the elements start clicking together I can't stop until I've completed it.
Now I need to think about what to add next...

Modular Addiction

This set is amazing! There is a lot of detail in this multilevel building. 

Includes the following scenes 
-Barber Shop
-Detectives Office
-Restroom
-Pool Hall
-Break Room/Kitchen

What I like about this set the most is the multiple scenes. This set is advertised as a Detectives Office but in fact it includes so much more. The breeze way is a neat add in. I am sure most people see it as an area missing pieces but I think it makes it more realistic. The curb appeal is very captivating and the architecture of this set is really well put together. The pool and barber advertisement brings this building to life. Also the water tower is a nice touch bringing a classic detective theme.

I enjoyed building this set it is great buy for any Lego town.

Must Have For Any Size Lego Town

I absolutely love this building. I like how it breaks up the building to create some different texture and color in the modular line. The signs are also great. I did wonder as I built, what's with all the hidden cookies? It was well worth watching the video with the designer to hear the story behind that. One of my new favorite pieces is the wanted poster in the detective's actual office.

What's With All The Cookies?

This set employs a wide variety of cool elements. In particular I like the mirror, pool table secret storage spaces in the detective's office, barber's shop, and game room. It is extremely detailed and has a wide range of things to do in the set. The only thing I am not a fan of are the sides of the building which are rather ugly. This would not matter if you attached multiple sets as it implies you should. Overall I really do like it.

The Coolest LEGO Set I've Ever Bought

I was making up my mind for few weeks before this purchase. I wanted a big set and ended up choosing from modular buildings (Parisian Restaurant, Palace Cinema and Detective's Office) and The Simpsons House. Although I love Homer's family and the cartoon itself, I went with the Detective's Office after watching couple of reviews online. The story behind it was quite nice (the cookie-smuggling plot) and the building itself looked very nice with the brick finish, "Pool" sign etc.

It took me about 9 hours total to accomplish (3 days stretch after work). I wasn't expecting anything really difficult and couldn't name it "Expert level" after building it as well. But there were moment when I caught myself pretty entertained with the way some bricks were connected giving the specific result (very detailed fan, the "Pool" sign mentioned before, pool itself). Detail level is incredible. I love the kitchen and the office (desk, table lamp, newspaper stall and the exterior staircase).

I enjoyed this set a lot. I love the way it was designed with regular bricks, not with ones made specifically for a set. Well - that's why I love the whole idea of modular building. Regular smiling face is a cherry on top - so classic.

I really loved the whole building process and the result is totally satisfying. I would recommend it to anyone starting the adventure with modular buildings. I'm looking forward to buling another one. Maybe Pet Shop before it is retired.

Overall this set is pure fun. Go grab one, you won't regret it.

Great set to start collecting modulars

As a standalone set, this is a fantastic build. The intricate details bring life and character to each and every room, and the textures and colours are a nice combination in my opinion. There's plenty going on, and it was an appealing choice to have two distinctly different buildings in one. The inclusion of a real mirror was superbly done, with it fitting in perfectly with its surroundings and adding a certain finesse to the room. The clever build methods dotted throughout the construction kept things interesting too.

However, there are some things that just keep this product from being perfect in my eyes, and that is because I am comparing it to the other modulars. I have to echo what was said in another review, in that the predetermined storyline felt like a somewhat more childish addition to the modular range. It certainly shows that the designers have put a lot of thought into its playability, and it undoubtedly adds a lot of fun to the building, but that in itself makes it stand out from the others. Previously, each building has stood tall and proud, and as a blank canvas for the builder to create a story or else leave it as an impressive visual display. By comparison, the Detective's Office seems more... I don't know... "cartoonish", and looks ever so slightly out of place next to the towering Town Hall or elegant Parisian Restaurant. The seedy aura given off by the pool hall players, the hidden passages and the theme of prohibition, while a highly appropriate setting for a detective's office, jar slightly against the prim and proper nature of the other sets. That, and it is considerably shorter!

To conclude, I really do like this set and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good challenging build with a lovely, playable structure at the end. There is plenty to see and do, and it provides a lot of fun. But for those die-hard fans of the modular range, you may feel a little underwhelmed by this otherwise excellent product.

A lovely addition, but just shy of perfect

I have the last few Lego Modular buildings released (the only Lego sets in our house actually), and I must say this set is my least favorite of the series.

What I do like about this set is the brick half of the building. The detail inside the pool hall and the detectives office are great and a lot of fun! For example, I love the pool table, the dart board, the removable ceiling fan, the clutter in the detectives office, the stray cat and the hidden safe. All these features do a great job of trying to capture the essence of this building (an old time detectives office on the seedy side of town).

The blue half of the building, however, is what drags this set down. While the barber shop is nice, the second and third floor are too small, particularly due to the recessed center brown part of the building. All there is on the 2nd floor is a bathroom and on the 3rd floor is a partially furnished kitchen. Ok, I can probably get past the 2nd floor just having a public bathroom, but the random kitchen on the 3rd floor that is fully open to the public is just a bit too much for me.

Perhaps having a secret cookie kitchen in the cellar or in a hidden attic would have worked OK - but in a public room just does not add to this set at all. Unfortunately, this 3rd floor room is also too small to really modify into something better...like a seedy accounting office for the mobsters that run the pool hall or something...

As far as the modulars go, I would recommend this set only if you already have all of the other modular buildings on your wish list.

Half Good - Half Bad

Disappointing!
Well I have all the modulars (Market St, Café Corner, Green Grocer, Pet Shop, Town Hall etc etc) and they are slowly getting easier to build & less intricate.
I still remember the joy of seeing those earlier come together and being very impressed.
This set & the Parisian Café are pretty basic & Lego seems to be setting a trend here.
Not sure of the logic behind this and us Lego fans are definitely getting less but for the same money (and Lego is not cheap in Australia).
Bring back the difficult sets such as Grand Carousel. These types are the best sets and turn into genuine collector items.
