Oh, by far, my favorite modular. I love every bit of this set. Every floor has tons of fun details and playability. I'm a restaurant manager so I really took to the diner, the checkered floor, and the JUKEBOX, oh I love the jukebox so much. The exhaust system is a gorgeous, accurate touch that I didn't expect. The seating is great, the gumball machine is so cute and could easily be turned into Tom Servo from MST3K if one were inclined to do so. The gym has the beautiful red boxing ring that was a lot of fun to build, and the boxing bag is perfect, though I wish there was a spot to stand minifigures on the red pieces. The third floor is the least interesting and is STILL awesome, if that tells you any idea how much I love this set. The recording booth with the sound material is so clever! The exterior of the set has a lot to show for, too, it's not just a front showing one like most of them are. The side with the stairs is perfect to have on the end of a display. The diner sign itself was really cool to do. And the Pink Cadillac! TRY not singing that song when you build it! (There may be an age requirement on that reference) So many awesome building techniques in this one, added to the gorgeous facade and interiors, makes this the winner for me. Is it my favorite of ALL sets? I dunno, the Tree House and Barracuda Bay and this are all such stunning sets, I can't really pick one, so I'll just leave them all as an equal top three. I added some lights myself, not one of those expensive custom sets, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Highly, highly recommended. Hopefully you can find it for a decent price now that it's retired!

My favorite modular.

LEGO

As noted by some, there are some changes with this modular in regards to previous ones, but I find them to be positive. The coloring is bold as you might expect to find in a place like South Florida and many of the elements you would hope to find in a 1950's style Art Deco diner are there. You have the checkered floor, the stools, a booth, a jukebox, and a nice grill build in the back of the main room. My son wanted to put some of the features such as the gumball machine and the big diner sign together, so he did. The upper two floors consist of a gym and a recording studio. There are several interesting minibuilds on those levels as well. At a glance, this structure might seem simpler than some of the others in the past, however there are some very interesting building techniques presented to get the brick effect on the upper floors, the curves of the diner, windows like you have never seen before, and a fantastic spiral staircase in the back. I took three days to enjoy the build, doing one floor each day. It was really interesting seeing it come together. 

Yes, the minifigures have expressions now, but they seem to work well here. You have the cook and the waitress working the diner, a bodybuilder and a boxer in the gym, and a very familiar looking rock star and a manager to complete the minifigs. There is also a classic car probably meant to be a pink cadillac. It is not too bad in itself. The only thing I might have done differently is switch the three windshield parts for a single molded one. 

I think the diner will fit in well with the other modulars. Some feedback indicates that it might clash with others. However, i would think that the likes of Market Street, Palace Cinema, and Parisian Restaurant to name a few would be quite rare in my part of the world as well. It does make a really good standalone model if you do not plan on displaying it with others due to the fact that all but one side has details. There is only one flaw I can really see in the structure. I feel like it should have been a corner building with the outer curves of the diner level acting as the corner. If you attach another building to its left, you will set the side of the curve flush with the other building, and probably expose the unsightly part of the other building in the process as well. To bring out the essence of the design, I would recommend placing a street in front and also either an alley or another street to the left side, effectively making it a corner and allowing you to see the best parts of the building

Go ahead and give this one a try. It has nice color, new techniques, and is quite displayable in the end.

What you would hope for in a modular

I couldn't wait for this set to go on sale so I could build it. I love the look and colors of this set. There are a couple of new building techniques (at least for me) that I think are pretty cool. Out of the 3 levels my favorite would be the diner level as it reminds me of what a 1950's should look like. The boxing ring level has some pretty good details I just wish the mats had lego pegs so you would be able to set the minifigs up on them without them falling over and I just might switch a few pieces with pegs so I can set them up on the mats. The recording studio has some neat details but could be better. The outside architecture is by far the best feature. 

The one downside to this series is that they only come out once a year. I do wish they would release a couple of new one every year so I could get my lego fix more often. Overall, I do love these sets and can't wait to put them together.

Love the new Diner!

Every year, I look forward to January 1, when the new Modular building is released in the States. This is my 11th Modular building, and one of my favorites..

After seeing images of the Diner, I immediately loved the design. I know some people don't like the 50's look and how that fits in with the rest of the Modular line, but I think it's a fantastic leap forward for the line. There are so many great, non-traditional building techniques, which is always fun.

After years of recatangukar buildings, I found it very refreshing to see a building with so many curves built in to it.

The lower level diner is fantastic! From the jukebox, to the ketchup and mustard bottles, the milkshake machine, and the bacon and pancakes cooking on the griddle, its perfect.

The middle level gym is also very well done, offering a lot of decorations in a small space. I especially like the heavy bag (that actually swings) and the weights.

The upper floor recording studio looks great (I especially like the soundproofing tiles).

Lego has made another great Modular building with a spot-on color scheme. Playability is excellent!

Another great addition to the Modular series!

This is the first set I've build in at least five years. It was great. I didn't build all of it. My friend built the majority of the second floor but I built the rest of it. My favorite part was building the little juke box, and the counter top. The whole build was fun in general. None of it was too tedious, so that's a plus.

Diner

I was not too impressed with this set based on the pictures but bought it anyway. Once I got to building it I found myself really liking it! Lot of detail and cool colors! I have just finished the second floor and the spiral staircase was ingenious. Really cool!

Downtown Diner

I really like this Modular and I like the whole look for being a Diner the main floor is very cool I liked building the Diner Logo sign and the inside has so much great detail like the checker board floor plus I like the kitchen with a big stove with bacon and pancakes I like that we get a cook and a cute waitress on rollerskates with a ice cream smoothie I also like the Jukebox and a candy machine both were fun little builds the second floor is very cool and interesting it has a good work out area with a boxing ring and punching bag and a water cooler for the figures to cool off for a bit I like the boxer with his hair and the female bodybuilder is very cute as well she also has a double sided face that shows her breaking a sweat like she is lifting up the heavy weights the top floor I really like alot and the even is a small recording studio for the rockstar to practice and record more music and there is a lady who works up there who might be helping the rockstar record his music in her electronic area to adjust the sound and all plus there is a chair and a table with a wine glass and bottle for her to relax I also like the pink Cadillac which is a nice car and fits well with this building and overall this Diner Building has some nice detail and color for being a 50's style building also I really like the big window in the front and to me it had a Jukebox look. Also I know alot of people don't like that the figures don't have plain faces anymore but I kinda like that they do and with their expressions they all fit in well for this Diner and this would look good next to another modular building or good as a standalone.

A Great 50's Style Building

By its self, this is a spectacular set. It looks great and is detailed very well(especially the 1st floor) The 2nd and 3rd floors are a bit lacking in detail. My one complaint about the build itself is that the azure color has slightly different color variants in the quality and is definitely noticeable. Also, the left side doesn't cover up the wall of the modular that would be next to it. I modified mine to be a corner modular which worked out better. I think it also looks out of place next to the other modules, however, I like the direction lego is going with this one, and I hope to see more modular sets in this time period. If want to add this to a string of modules that you already own, I would suggest either modifying it or skip it. As a stand-alone set, though, it's terrific! Oh and RIP the classic smiley :(

Transitional set

I bought this set for fun and at first I was skeptical because as a long-time collector of these modular building sets, I was not a fan of the incoherent design. However, I was pleasantly surprised when building it! There are so many fun little details that I'm so glad were included and the unique colors and slick style actually made this set pop in the best way! I'm especially a fan of the window on the first floor and the stairs leading to the upper stories. The reason I gave this set 4 bricks out of five though is because some pieces are not connected to anything and it makes it annoying to move the building or anything inside it (cups on the counter, camera in the booth, pancakes on the plate, etc.). I really wish there was at least one pin added for these pieces to sit without constantly falling and rolling around of the building floor.

Others were right, it definitely stands out!

As an avid modular building collector I always collect the newest addition to the series. However, even though the designer did well on the building itself, it stands out (In a bad way) with the smooth curves and arches, and bright colors, when displayed with other buildings. (I wonder if that was intentional) I feel like Mike just ignored the designs of previous buildings and just made this one to stand out. I wonder if Jamie was even part of the design.(If not, bring him back!) I understand that Lego can't do 30's style European buildings forever, but they could've started the new generation of modular buildings with a building that's a little more subtle in appearance to act as a branching point between the two. (all this assuming they continue the 50's theme) 
A controversial change is the minifigures heads, in which Lego swapped the classic smiley faces for modern faces. I like it, but it makes it hard to display minifigures with and without classic faces. Now I have to either swap out these heads for the smiley face, Or get modern heads for all the previous minifigures.
Overall, a decent set, but display wise, it's the worst, as it's just too different from the other modular buildings.
