Excellent set with many “Easter Eggs”. Great play features. The build isnt bad but builder needs moderate expierence. 
The ride function only works flawlessly if you are really careful building ( aligning parts and giving technic parts some “play”. careful builders will be rewarded with flawless action feature which is great.

Haunted House

I was so excited when I saw that this Haunted House was 'coming soon', yes the price is a little higher than the creator houses previously available, but for me it is worth it. The size, amount of pieces, that excited sound that escapes me when I'm showing anyone who listen 'look it lights up'..........
I found a couple of the aspects of the build technically difficult but that is part of the build enjoyment. I love my Haunted House and can't wait to alter my dining room round in order to add it to my town display. Yes I'm altering my dining room to make more space to show it off, normal behaviour right?

Excellent

I was so excited to receive this kit but I knew that it would be a hefty build so I was saving it up for my planned time off work. Lets face it, 2020 is a bust holiday wise so how better to spend your time than building?

This build absolutely flew past. There is so much to see as you build and there are even little details in the build manual that explain what each artifact is that the Baron has on display. I loved all the throw backs to The Adventurers sets, I may have missed out on them but can dream of owning them I guess.

The use of the Light Brick is fun and I love the way it makes a "hidden image" appear in the portrait. Try it, it's fun! The main draw of this is the lift ride and it is the the last thing you build (more or less). Clicking the chain together was a breeze (easier than 203 of the blooming things for the Roller Coaster) and installation went well. However, the first time I used it I hadn't secured the carriage in to the lift properly (don't make my mistake make sure you clip it in to place) so it went up fine but on the drop the carriage jolted loose and jammed in the shaft. This also tore one of the grey breaking plates (thank you Lego for giving me 3 in my kit). So, I had to take the tower apart to free the elevator and then to rethread the chain. Now works smoothly but, to be honest, this is on display on a high shelf so I can't really play with it.

My favourite piece though is the organ. It just looks so cool built up and I can't believe how well it turned out - little mini masterpiece.

For those that care - NO STICKERS! Everything is pre-printed so no nasty fiddly bits that never end up looking right.

The Artifacts

I was looking forward to this build as I have purchased all the Creator houses in the past, and although not in the same series was hoping for the same quality of build. However I feel the quality of this build is poor in comparison. The roof section above the entrance doesn't fit properly and doesn't line up with the other section of the roof leaving a gap. On another section of the roof there is what I can only call a kink or gap which means it does not have a straight line. The " gargoyles" that sit on the corners of the roof aren't provided all around the build. At the back by the braking mechanism there are exposed studs where in other builds there would have been plates to cover them. The last 2 points are cosmetic I know but for the money and comparing with other builds I was not happy. I have sent a complaint to Lego raising the issues.

Disappointed

I've enjoyed building a number of Lego sets included Hogwarts Castle, Star Wars Death Star etc, so when I received the Lego booklet last year and saw the Haunted House, I thought I'd treat myself to it for Christmas.

I enjoyed the build but do agree with other comments that there are a number of small pieces so actually the value for money aspect is questionable. Also, the name plate for the front of the lift car was missing which is really unusual but I was able to order one online.

Now to the lift itself...I've only just read all the reviews and 100% agree with all the comments. Mine doesn't work from the bottom, I have to push it up beyond the rubber wheels and then can wind it to the top. When you let go it stops above the wheels. Come on Lego....you've replied to every comment like this by saying we're not building it properly? There's a lot of us out there who know what we're doing so just admit this design is slightly flawed.

I knew that I wanted this set as soon as Lego released images of it. It's huge, it's impressive, and it appeared to have everything that would make this set epic. As I put it together, I was thrilled with just how great this set was- and how awesome it was in terms of design, attention to detail, and just overall looks. I was extremely satisfied with the build... until I was finished and tried the elevator mechanism. The mechanism that many seem to have trouble with- but Lego continues to say is just builder error. 

I've been building Legos for a long time. I have quite the collection- including many epic Technic sets like #42009, #42100, and more recently, #42114. I've also built all of the Creator Expert Modular buildings- some of which include some tricky design elements. I've never, ever had issues related to mechanisms not working correctly once built. I've never had to take parts off and redo them because something didn't work right... until the Manor Von Barron. Somehow I was able to put together the much more complex Lego Liebherr R9800 Excavator without making a mistake... but faced issues with getting this relatively simple building together? Issues that continue to plague the model despite many attempts to rebuild its components? 

It seems like the elevator mechanism can't handle the weight of the elevator car when it's passing by the wheels that provide the braking feature that's used during the car's decent. When you turn the lever on that raises the car- the model clicks loudly as the gears slip. Eventually the car slowly is raised up the tower- but the action is slow and clunky. Once it passes the brake wheels- the clicking isn't as often. That slipping/skipping of gears completely ruins the 'wow' factor of this model. 

Many reviewers have complained about the clicking/skipping issue- and Lego just tells them to rebuild. I have. I've rebuilt the.tower twice. I've rebuilt the gear mechanism a few times. I ensured that every piece was put together perfectly to avoid problems with the elevator car getting caught as it moves up the tower. I've added links to the chain. I've taken a few out. 
 Nothing improves the clicking noise / skipping problem. It's almost like the chain and gear design aren't strong enough to lift the weight of the car. Maybe Lego should have used a larger chain or more robust gear design. 

If only one or two people were complaining about it, builder error would be an appropriate assumption... but when many reviewers have alerted Lego to this problem- and YouTube reviewers (including Lego superfans) are all experiencing the same problem... then you know it's a design problem and not a builder problem. 

Unfortunately, that means that this Lego is just an awesome exterior/interior building. The ride function would have made this an epic set. Unfortunately, considering the somewhat consistent problem that many reviewers are complaining about with the elevator- this set is just good, not great or epic. It looks good on a shelf, but the coolness of showing the ride function off to friends is overshadowed by the embarrassment of the very loud skipping of the gears and inconsistent functionality of the elevator function. 

Other than telling people to rebuild their sets or to call the phone number for support (and be put on hold for an hour)- will Lego offer any other support or a reworked design for people who have paid a good chunk of change for this set? It would be nice.

Great Looks, Poor Functionality

I got this set for my grandson and myself. I basically like it, but the elevator gets stuck going up the shaft. If you try pushing the crank a little harder, the chain breaks apart, which is a real pain to correct. We have to take the roof off to stick a dowel into it, to push the car back down. The crank is rather flimsy, and comes off easily. After the first build, I figured something must have been put together incorrectly, to cause the elevator to malfunction, We took it apart down to the foundation, and rebuilt the entire thing, but no joy, nothing changed. You really can't use the elevator, and since this was a selling point for us, it's very disappointing.
On top of that, there were a few pieces missing, which we were fortunately able to find substitutes for out of our stash. This is unusual, only a few sets out of the many we have are missing pieces.
Because of the elevator issue, I would not buy this set again. Perhaps it wasn't tested in Quality Control enough.

Elevatoris a Minus

I was very excited about this set, like all other releases this was a build that I wish I would not have purchased. Disjointed, lacking soul. Feels like a team that failed at bringing a lego build to life. Just a cheap, push it through junk. Designers, you failed. All sets just seem to getting more simple and less thought.

I got this set the day it went available for VIPs. I can't tell how much I was excited to get this amazing ready to display monster ! The 2 main positive points are its value for money (this set is huge and heavy!) and its highly impressing and beautiful display value. The overall building experience is cool (until the lift), and I am repeating myself, this is a beautiful display piece. But as you have noticed, I am reviewing this colossal set at 2/5. So what went wrong ? Before telling you what went wrong, keep in mind that I am playing and building LEGO for over 30 years now, so I know when a set has a problem. THE LIFT MECANISM........................... We are in 2020, LEGO guyz..... How could LEGO designers flopped that much on this lift system ? I am really asking LEGO this question. HOW COULD LEGO DESIGNERS MISSED THAT MUCH ON THAT ONE ? For the price we are paying this set, this is not acceptable at all. The chain always snapped out and falls inside the high tower, giving very little room to take it back and to build it back in place. The crank is not powerfull enough to support the weight of the lift, making the mecanism wheels turn without any effect half of the time, for the dents of the wheels skipping and missing other wheels' dents. Also (like if it was not enough negativness), the front facade on the left, with the Manor Von Baron sign, is EXTREMELY fragile, and I really mean it, exxxtreeemelyyyy fragile. Look at it too intensely and it will break down. I mean, come on LEGO...............Trust me LEGO fans and master builders, this 2 negative points really ruin all the experience of this set. It is a display model ONLY, don't play with it, don't touch it, don't breathe near it. I do not recommend it.

What a very sad fail...

As many haver reported, the elevator (which is the big payoff for this build) is finicky and just not designed well enough to work consistently. It is too much friction for the chain to move past the wheels. We improved things some by shortening the chain by al ink or two but it is still hit or miss. I think Lego should at a minimum include some troubleshooting tips in the booklet.
