I bought this when it first came out last September 15 (With VIP Card only) and its pretty awesome. Nice details especially the holiday lights on a white tree branch. I also bought the power functions as well to motorized this train. Im planning to put under our Christmas Tree together with Santa's Workshop and Winter Toy Workshop. A nice gift to have this Christmas and I would recommend it for sure especially for those who are building their Lego christmas village collection.

Awesome LEGO Train

We love this Christmas train!! We added some straight track to make it an oval under the tree. My grandson helped me put it together and he really enjoyed the little toys, especially the fire engine with the moving ladder. We already had the power functions since we motorized our Lone Ranger Train so we just used those. The bright colors are delightful and it went together very easily.

Absolutely Delightful!

I just recently started to get into Lego again - and when I ordered the winter village I saw the Winter train and had to get it too.

I've built it in a bit over 2 hours - and have been sitting driving my train in circles for another half hour, as the tree spins so nicely when the train is moving... ;)
I love the details and how many little extras come with it - I would definitely purchase it again and am very, very happy with it!

I love it so much

Every year my kids can't wait to put up the Lego Winter Village, and this year they are super excited. This train is great for kids of all ages, and adults too.
The power functions are a must. Some have commented that they remove colour, which is true, but it is hardly noticeable.
It's going to be a lot of fun figuring out how to incorporate this set into the whole village this year.

Great Addition to Winter Village

I don't normally write reviews but felt compelled to write this as my son absolutely adores Lego and adores trains. This is extremely well made and very colourful plus you get a good amount of track. My son is 8 and managed the majority of it by himself, although he does build a lot of Lego. I guess it is now up to me to purchase the power functions for it..

Amazing LEGO train

Awesome...love it! I would like to purchase the power accessories however, he is not interested in the remote control. He simply wants to have it go and shut it off when he likes. Is the remote required or can we just purchase the other parts(8884,88000,88002) for it to run as he would like? He would also like to purchase extra track pieces to expand around our tree.

Holiday Train

This train is a great addition to the winter village collection. It is fairly easy to put together and has some great 'old timey' embellishments. The tree and train set spin as the train moves along which delights my children. My only negative #and its a small one# is the scale is a little large in comparison to the other village items.

Great addition to the winter village

I was excited when I heard they were coming out with a new train for Winter Village (WV). Long time coming. While the train has a nice WV feel to it, but the mediocre execution is nothing to get too excited about. The good news is that it has a lot of potential.

I will be buying an additional set and some additional parts to round out the train with more cars and a redesigned steam engine and tender of an Emerald Night sizing, but retain the WV look. At least Lego did inspire the creative side of me to modify and expand it.

I wish they had done away with the track and I would have preferred more cars or expanded set. I assume they probably have tons of curves to get rid of, but the radius is a bit small. Consider adding 4 strait track if you have other than a small tree or several WV sets to run around. Maybe they should have bumped up the price point some to add more cars.

If you are creative, enjoy building and don't mind grabbing some additional parts, there is a lot to work with here to customize it and make it your own. Oooo... Hey Lego, maybe expand the train next year with additional cars? If not, cough... WV train station... cough.

Notes: Had Lego dropped the track and expanded the train some, I would have given 4-5 star ratings.
Mine will be outfitted with Power Functions or 9V depending on final design.
I know this was probably not designed with my demographic in mind. I am sure kids will enjoy the set very much and get lots of play from it.

So-so set, but with lots of potential

Just finished building and was surprised at how little there was in the set. For that price I would have liked to have had more landscape elements like in previous WV sets or at least enough passenger seats on the train to hold all the passengers. Instead, the caboose feels half finished with no railing on the ends and the lanterns hang down so low that you can't stand a minifig outside of the doors either. The front of the engine is so light weight that it keeps tipping backwards and coming off the tracks when pushed by hand. I'm surprised the alternate instructions recommend installing the motor on the front as I'd imagine it won't be able to get much traction there. I still gave it two stars because at a glance it doesn't look half bad. In the end though, it felt a little too gimmicky for my taste so I'll be sticking with the Emerald Night for my winter village.

Small Train Big Price

I was really looking forward to liking this train, as I big fan of Lego trains I was expecting another success for Lego with this train, even the placing of the optional motor was not a make or break for me; even though it does take away from the aesthetic look of the train. What really surprised me most, is how flimsy this train is.Many of the parts are only attached by one or two studs and they tend to be important pieces that make up a foundation for other parts built off it. 

The coal car is the worst so many times when I pick it up parts fall off, I try to put that piece back on but the slightest pressure causes the sides of the coal car to collapse. Also the magnetic car coupler on the back of the coal car is oddly placed as it attached by two studs and easily falls off and the way the coal car is designed putting back on is difficult. If the coupler had studs on top I could at least use another piece to push down on it to help keep it in place. For a train that is designed to be pushed around the tracks it is not designed well.

A bit of a disappointment
