So many times i went to order and this was out of stock, and being the last set needed for me to complete the gold figures for the 20th anniversary sets it was like chasing a ghost. Three times i had the email to say back in stock; and as always, nothing. It may not be the most complex of sets, but it once i had it, i thoroughly enjoyed the entire build. And then, becasue it need it, myself and a friend played a proper game of chess with the set. He of course beat me!!

Worth the wait

Cute chess set that is playable, fits the HP theme.
The only downsides is that the chess pieces don't stick to the board, much like a real chess set, but can be more precarious being slippery lego pieces. The other unfortunate downside are the collectible chocolate frog cards. I understand random assortment, but getting duplicates in a moderately expensive set is quite unacceptable.

Enjoyable set

As another chess set from Lego, this one is geared more toward the fans of Harry Potter. I'm OK with that but wish the box would be the same square dimension for ease of storage.  Otherwise, it's not difficult to build a storage container out of spare Lego parts. Looking forward to the next chess set from Lego.

Another collectible chess set

This set is nice to look at. Playing it was smooth as long as board is absolutely still as the very cute pieces are quite slippery on the board. Was getting a little annoyed at the idea of how to move it with all the pieces to another room but then kinda spotted the obvious solution. Build a little repetitive but then it's a chess board it was always going to be. Really like the look and teaching daughter to play after

Nice pieces

My 8yo really wanted a LEGO chess set so when we saw this one on prerelease, it was a no brainer. He put the set together in about an hour and has played multiple games now. The board is a little small for the size of the pieces making it a little awkward to move around the board. The pieces are obviously based on the Harry Potter set but are slightly confusing to keep track of what is what.  He's happy with the set and it will get lots of use but there was room for improvement on LEGO's side.

Fun Chess Set

It is a nice set, My kids enjoyed building the set. But it is hard to play with. The board is slippery and the characters are too big for the board and they fall down knocking down the others, too. It would be better to make the board bigger (using extra pieces) and also attach rubber to the bottom of the characters so that they don't fall off easily.
The characters are hard to distinguish at the beginning but after a few rounds of play, it gets easier.

Nice set, Hard to play with

He loved building it. He thought it was an awesome set. However, he and his father tried to play a game on it and it was difficult to play. The board was small and it made it hard to maneuver the pieces. Also as they were playing it was hard to tell the pieces apart, specifically the knight and rook.

Great Build, OK Play

Many people may not realize, but Lego has made a Chess/Checker set before, under the Creator Expert series, while the board sits taller than Wizard Chess, it's a much better designed set. each square has an actual nub to HOLD the game piece in place, the board sit higher because all the underneath space is storage, not just dead support beams. It can also be pulled in half and stored easily, there is no easy way to store Wizards Chess, the board doesn't fit back in the box it comes with, all the pieces are loose and have pieces fall off easily. Overally the build is incredibly simple you basically just repeat the same steps 16 times for the pawns and 8 more times for the named pieces, the board takes no time at all to assmemble beacause its literally just a few spacers and 64 black and white tiles. It could have been done much better.

Why would you go backwards in designing a set?

I wanted a Lego chess set and I'm an HP fan so I preordered this set as soon as it was possible.

I think it's the first Lego set I regret buying. This set was really dull to build, no cool techniques and very repetitive (the repetitiveness was expected). 

The set is also very plain looking when done. I feel the board is lacking some finishing touches and the play pieces are only vaguely similar to the movie chess set.

As a playable set, I'll echo another reviewer: The board is pretty small and the pieces can be hard to differentiate but it's definitely usable.

Anyways, take a good look at the pictures before purchasing. There's really nothing special here. If you just want a chess set, you're probably better off designing your own.

I got this for my daughter so we could play chess together. She put it together herself, so I can't talk about how the building part was. But my daughter said it wasn't that great building it. She said it wasn't her favorite Lego set, but it was okay since it worked good as a chessboard. Overall, mixed review.
