Wonderful value for the piece count and types. As a chess instructor, I wouldn't use this to teach young students, but it's good enough to play with, assuming no timers. The pieces, when assembled well, are very sturdy and hold up to play.

It would be nice to be able to get additional queens. (Certain parts aren't available in pick-a-brick.) It is common to have an extra queen for both sides in similarly priced chess sets. Not important unless I'm actually trying to play games frequently with this set. I will generally just have this board sitting as office decoration.

The design of the board is sturdy. There are very few minor things to nitpick. Blue 2X1s instead of blue 2X2s. Having to add the little green, round buttons to stack the two board parts. Checker pieces aren't ideal.

I will be getting more sets to use as gifts! Highly recommend purchasing at this price!

Excellent gift option

I have had this thing for a bit now, and after playing 30+ chess games and 24 checkers games, I think now is a good time to do the review. Now let me start off with that build. It was, a pain, I guess, but I knew that was going to happen. You have to build sixteen pawns, with eight being white and the others black. The board took time with all the little pieces, but the end product looks good. So umm, I guess I do the figs now? The build is solid for all the builds, kind of wish that we had a way to king someone in the checkers game tho. I play chess a lot and the builds for those as I said before is good. This works well on the road also, as the studs have a stronger connection than I would have guessed for just one point.

2 in 1

This set is great! I love the dark red/black vs dark blue/white color scheme. There's lots of great parts in here in those colors. If you're looking for a chess set, it does the job admirably. If you want a bunch of nice parts for a decent price, this set is exceptional.

Greeat set for decoration or parts!

This is A-maz-ing. If you want to buy a chess set this has got to be the one to get. Not only is it cheap it's made of LEGO! you can buil and custamize your own figures to use on the board and in terms of playability its the best lego set you can buy.

Grandmaster!

I love having a lego set with so much replay value. The build was straight forward. We really enjoyed modifying the chess pieces to make them smaller/more streamlined (i.e. easier for gameplay/maneuverability) without losing out on some of the very pretty detailing (the knight's horse ears are adorable, and the bishop is particularly cleverly constructed). Amazing value for the number of pieces. We've played several games on it so far and everything holds up very well. The storage aspect of it is also quite clever/appreciated. Overall, as two lego and chess geeks, we're very satisfied.

Excellent value

At the risk of sounding like a copycat or broken record... price per piece ratio is fantastic! And the pieces are the kinds that are common and can absolutely be utilized for most MOC builds you can imagine.

The planning that went into designing the pieces deserves more than a good word or two. The builds are surprisingly designed to be "interlockingly sturdy". You can drop a chess piece and it would not disintegrate into countless tiny pieces that you'd have to search the floor for (or God forbid, step on!).

The fact that the whole set is totally washable is gladly acknowledged. I have sets made of wood, marble, glass, etc. that are great to display, but difficult to dust and/or wash.

I would have to agree with reviewer henrythelion with regards to the extra queen pieces. Extra queen pieces (one for each color) for pawn promotions (quite a common occurrence during chess matches) would have been greatly appreciated. Also, I was kind of hoping to get extra pieces of the brick with horizontal snap (Element #4211087) as it does protrude and is in danger of snapping off when the chess board is separated for storage/transport.

Overall, it is a good buy - both for play, display, and reusing the parts for my MOC tray.

I love that Lego finally came out with a generic chess/checkers combo set. As others have said it makes a great coffee table/conversation piece. Great utility to this set; all the pieces stow nicely below the playing surface with room to spare. While the patterns are a little redundant to build, the base is very sturdy; the ability to split it in half for more compact storage is a nice touch. The chess pieces are nicely designed with the right amount of detail, are sturdy, and have a little weight to them, without easily tipping over. The price to parts ratio is much more tolerable than some of the other themed chess-only sets.
 
I do wish a little more thought was put into the checkers portion. A single-stud connector would have been nice for the tops, to allow “kinged” pieces to stay together. A couple extra checkers would have been nice to have too, as those are the easiest pieces to lose.

This set is very neat but mine was missing too many pieces. I am pretty bummed that I cannot finish the set. Bag #5 is where the pieces were missing from in case that happens to someone else.

Missing Pieces

I bought this set because my son and I are keen Lego fans and enjoy playing chess -- so what a way to combine both interests!

The pictures on the box looks impressive, we built it over a few nights together, and yes the pieces look impressive too.

We're both big Lego fans, which is why it's sad to say it's been such a disappointment to play.

The pieces only grip the board by one stud, and are very easy to knock over. There's not much room between pieces, so fingers are easily a problem -- and it's not an adult-finger problem, my son has the same problem.

We tweaked the "corner" pieces that sit under the removable board top -- instead of having alternating colours in the corners, we put the white on one half and black on the other half.

I think this set would have been better with a bigger playing board, and somehow with a better way for the pieces to grip the board. The single stud attachment doesn't seem to grip enough, and pieces topple very easily, spoiling a game.
