It starts with the weight of the box. Then the thickness of the building brochures! Finally we attack the realization of "the craft". After building the base, we test the electronics, it's stress, but (oooh!) It works. We continue with the arm and its many functions and degrees of freedom, then again tests! In the end everything works, but do not forget to recharge the smartphone and download the software updates that will be transferred to the excavator. We can then take on the challenges and test the maneuverability of the Liebherr. What a pleasure to build, what a belle and what a machine! !! - Yes.

Mechanics and Technology

Reasonable challenging build. Bluetooth control is good but in some parts it seems to be made complicated just to add more parts and for no benefit. Price is a bit high but definitely one of the best models yet and appears quite solid except for the tracks that drive it.

Great model

Was a fun build and the finished product is great. It is a large model. The excvator works well and to use your phone to control it is a fantastic idea. The bucket needed a little bit of plastic removed so it would not bind. 
Recomend to all if you are thinking of buying it.

Great build

An all round brilliant lego set. Very fun to build, yet challeneing at times. I had no problems with the power systems working and the instructions were very clear. Once completed it looks brilliant and works very well via the app. The many stickers are a bit of a pain, but they are high quality ones which don't peel off like with older sets.

Good to build - not too difficult.
Only had a bit of a problem with the App. Tried to test first part of the the build nothing worked. read the review where all motors needed to be connected for it to work - still nothing. After a while screen came up on App - software update - after this everthing fine. Also software updated for second part of the build. Shame there's no "home" bit of software to put model at a start position - would be a nice starting point - when starting to build up own programs. Or when model first starts up. What would be nice if Lego release a Dump Truck kit to the same scale as the Excavator. Or could have included one in the kit - as was done with the Bucket Wheel Excavator. Missed an oportunity there - buy the Excavator you also buy the Dump Truck????

GOOD PIECE OF KIT

Set just amazing.... What a pleasure to build this emblematic model of the German firm. The details, the technicality, the realism, the design, faithful to the Danish brand .... I can only recommend this gorgeous set... Lego hat... Once again

Incredible

The instructions were mostly clear and the few mistakes I encountered were easy to fix. The testing steps went well and I ended up with a functioning model. A great job by the mechanical engineers at LEGO! A few negatives for me were: 1. The 100 round studs used to simulate a load are a total waste. They are impossible to pick up. Go on the Internet and see many videos where reviewers end up hand picking up the studs and placing them in the bucket. I ended up using plastic Easter eggs. They are smooth and don't get hung up on each when you try to pick them up. Ping Pong balls would probably work too. 
2. The controller app could use some work. I would like to see the hubs being turned on through the app instead of the buttons. Also, the four buttons on the control screen used to create saved movements are too close to the tread controls and are too easy to hit when controlling the treads. A different layout moving those four buttons elsewhere would be nice.
All in all pleased with the model and I look forward to more TECHNIC builds.

A great build

Having put together all the big technics of the last few years, I couldn’t help but crack. That's it! Mounting: The construction experience is not as good as with the off-road crane. The mechanics are simpler, less challenging. Once the machine is assembled, we quickly forget the relative simplicity of the assembly as this machine is a monster! Very belle machine when finished, beautiful finishes. The pleasure goes up a notch when you launch the app and control the machine. A real pleasure. Efficient and linear controls. It’s definitely a step above the power function. However, we will regret the absence of "sandbox" on the application that would allow to reuse the hubs for custom models. After all, the real fun with LEGOs is to create your own designs...

Good, and at least good.

Had great expectations for this set and was greatly disappointed overly simple design with a lack of substance the app control didn,t seem to work that well and at the end of the day not everyone uses smart devices where as with the remotes you can leave the model in the cupboard for years with no issues just build add batteries and your good to go whoever you are with this model lego has in my opinion gone away from their roots if your going to add pipes make them functional this exactly what it says on the box a model with only basic functionality and the rest is just dress up it will probably be left to some lego fan to rebuild this into the model that it should have been as with the ultimate 42009 etc etc !

I have always expected great things from Lego since their name is synonymous with quality. I have enjoyed designing and building MOCs for some 35+ years. I was overjoyed to get this 42100 model, but very disappointed about the new Control+ system. I have tried time and time again to get the Control+ app to work on different devices, but needless to say, it doesn't perform 100%. The connection & testing of the hubs with my phone didn't work at all to begin with. I had not yet built the model because I wanted to do a quick test to see how the hubs worked with the new motors, but it kept failing to connect. I gave up and started building the model. As I completed the base, I did as the instructions said and tried to connect the hub to my phone. For whatever the reason, it worked... for this part. I proceeded to build and got to the next part to test (as there are 4 testing parts). The second one worked. I finished the model and tried to test all functionality, but I am still unable to sync the 2nd hub so that all functions are able to be tested. The model looks great sitting there, but otherwise functionally unless. I read a few reviews on the app and it appears that others have had similar issues. I generally buy sets for their parts and to see how Lego engineers figure out complex problems, which I was able to do with this model, but the Control+ app so far has been a big disappointment and you can't use the motors without the hubs, so there's that money down the drain until they improve the coding & testing of the app. On the Control+ page of the Lego website, it states very few Android devices that it was test on, but I would assume since it was Android, it should just work anyways, so I am guessing it is a bug within the app itself as I tried it on 3 different Android devices. Overall, I am very surprised that this doesn't work, but being so new, bugs are expected, just not from Lego and especially at the price. I would only recommend paying this price for the amount of parts you get and not the new hubs & motors until they get these bugs fixed.

Expected more from Lego

This is by far the best technic set ever released by LEGO. It is well designed, fun to put together, very large amount of parts per step(which I love), is huge in size, resembles the real life machine quite well. Now for the biggest downside, one of the battery boxes will not turn on or connect to the app(after countless hours of troubleshooting, testing the batteries, and checking for correct setup) resulting in a model that cannot be played with and less than a joy. I love it but cannot give it any more than 2 stars due to its price for collecting dust, and the sheer fact it doesn't function as intended.
