[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It's scary at first because of all the parts but honestly the instructions are so easy to follow that it makes everything so easy to build. My son and I built it together and it was neat watching him build this with me. He was so excited when we finished and hasn't put it away since! It's a great bang for your buck! My son has been playing with it all over the house and even took it outside and let me tell you, it's very sturdy!

My wife and I saw this at a hobby shop. I haven't built anything Lego since I was a kid but it seemed like a neat kit and the fact you can control it with a smartphone is cool. We bought the kit and decided to work on it together. I assembled and she found the parts I needed. We took our time and it turned out great. The only negative is that the app only has one virtual joystick for this model, which controls both the steering and forward/reverse speed. This makes going straight and turning while moving a little more difficult than if there were separate controls for each function. I'm impressed and now looking at other Technic builds for another project.

Surprisingly Nice

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this for my son for Christmas he was very excited. It took us about 3 hrs to put together so being a 10 year old he got very impatient. There was alot of tiny pieces and the directions were somewhat easy for me to understand but for my 10 year old son it was kind of difficult for him to understand. I did have to put most of it together. The pieces did snapp together very easy and if you put the wrong piece on it was easy to unsnap and fix it. It was very easy to set up once you got it put together. You just download the app and turn the Bluetooth on and let it sync. It is hard to steer its very touchy. It is neat cause it tells you the speed and the incline which makes it very neat. If you hit the car off somthing though the piece the holds the wheel on likes to keep popping off so this is a car that you have to be very gentle with. Other than that my son loves it.

Awsome car

I was on the fence about getting this RC buggy with all the mixed reviews. However I finally decided to get it and I'm glad I did. It was a nice build, clear instructions, and the final product is excellent. Awesome color scheme gives a nostalgic feel for anyone growing up in the 80's. It's very fast and agile and built up pretty solid it could survive some crashes. The only thing I don't like is the Control+ app as a lot of other people have mentioned. Only one stick to control everything and useless sound effects and battle mode. What I would suggest for anyone struggling with the controls is ditch the Control app altogether and use the Powered Up app instead. You can make a custom control scheme with separate throttle and steering. It only takes a few minutes to set up, there are videos on You Tube that explain how to do it. I highly recommend doing this to make this buggy a more enjoyable experience.

Solid Buggy, Bad controls

I've had this set now quite a few years and while it does sit on a shelf occasionally my kids and I will take it out for a rip.  Like most people say. The controls are less than ideal. Frankly Lego should have a control that is sold separately to make this line of products more fun! That said we do have loads of fun with it. And unlike others we do actually use it outside in the dirt, grass (shorter grass) even a pump track once.  It's fast for Lego and fun.. maybe fun because the controls are less than accurate.  Either way it's had some good use.   Big tip.. take batteries out if not using it!!   Anywho is a nice set to assemble and holds up fairly well.  Couple parts do come off and we have an Axel that slides out of place occasionally.  But that's maybe part of the fun.  Tinkering using building etc.. kids love to see how all the parts work together.

Love the buggy!

So like I wrote in the title I did not buy this set cause it was nice itself, I got it mostly for the hub and motors. Actually, I first bought a hub and 2 motors separately and then I realized it was cheaper to buy this set and basically get the same thing plus about 300 other technic pieces useful to build cars. So the choice was easy. I don't know why they don't make packages with a hub and a few motors, but this is kind of it... 

I think overall the playability is better than the top gear rally car cause it's faster. But the steering is really bad, it turns way to fast, so even if you add other motors and change gear ratio, you won't be able to go in a straight line. You'll have to change the steering mechanism and at this point that's a moc, not a mod.

Bought it for the hub and motors

Just like others have expressed, the ONE virtual joystick makes this vehicle hard to control and shuts the fun door on this kit shortly after the build ends.

PLEASE get rid of the unnecessary sound fx buttons and split the controls into TWO virtual joysticks like almost every R/C controller in existence.

The Fun Ends After The Build

This set is a mixed bag. The model itself is solid. The design, size and weight (it's got some heft once the batteries are added) are great. The one thing I'd like to see improved on the model itself is a better way to handle the wires. There are two clips provided to hold the wires in place, but it feels like more are needed to organize the wires so they are not just a jumbled mess in the driver's seat.

As others have pointed out, the controls for driving this are hot garbage. You have to use the app, which is fine. I'd prefer using an Xbox or other Bluetooth controller, but that's probably asking for too much. But the app has one virtual joystick that handles forward/backwards and turning, which is terrible. When trying to go forward in a straight line, it's nearly impossible as you'll tend to lean towards a side a bit and that makes the car turn. I really hope they update the app and separate foward/backwards from turning. Also, if the user is using a modern smartphone for controls, tilt controls seem like they would be a no-brainer here. 

Another small annoyance was that scanning the QR code on the manual prompts you to download the Lego Instructions app, which is great... except that this model isn't listed in the app. I purchased it on release day (1/1/2021) and the app listings by year didn't even go out to 2021.

A fun build with terrible controls

Offer these RC car sets and others with a Lego remote. 
There are a lot of parents out here that would like to buy this set and/or others for our kids, but will not do it because of the smartphone issue. Please stop this trend. It is stupid.

No to the Smartphone/ bluetooth

I hate to leave a bad review but the horrible app controls for this basically render it a paperweight. The single "joystick" that controls left/right/forward/reverse is extremely difficult to use and not enjoyable in the least. If LEGO is going to go down the path of making RC cars (which I think is a REALLY good idea, to be sure) they need to offer a physical controller. Or perhaps figure out how to use the smart phone's accelerometer and gyroscope? I really hope an update to the controls are on their way.
