I feel this was a good value ("Playability" vs Price)
The addition of powered takes things to the next level of creativity.  My son instantly started to figure out how to adapt his current vehicles to powered drive.  He had to think outside the box (which he does well anyway) instead of just following the directions and getting the same 'cookie cutter' results (which he also enjoys)
This may also resurrect some of the vehicles ($$) that have been built once or twice and now sit on a shelf or (worse) in their box.

Would I recommend this? Yes, I would.

Brings life to Lego models

Wal-Mart website promised delivery before Christmas but didn't come until Dec 29th. Product arrived in well packaged box and I personally witnessed it working as advertised, while my nephew excitedly built his first whiz-bang thing-a-ma-jig.

Good Product but late in shipping

You can addpower functions to almost any model! Heres what i've added them to so far:
-city coastgaurd helicopter (rotating blades and search lights)
-power miners thunder driller (rotating drill)
-bionicle mezuki (rotating cannon and lights0
-bionicle toa mistika pohatu (rotating propellers/drills and lit head piece)
I recommend it to anyone who likes power!

LEGO

These were made to go with Technic sets but... I found out you don't need one. I bet you could make these work with any set (maybe). For Christmas 09 I got this and the Midi scale Star Wars Melenium Falcon. I realized there was enough space inside to wire the lights in. I made them fit perfectly (After moving some pieces). Now the inside lights up and gives the ship a more realistic look (I guess you could by the lights seperatly if you feel the need to try this)>

Don't Need A Technic

Despite being a little pricey for just one motor, adding this set to the lego technic excavator makes the play experience 10 times better. The set comes with a couple of universal joints and cogs which are useful for controlling linear actuators on models like the excavator. The excavator is slow and boring to operate without this set, so it is definately worth buying. The telescopic handler however is not much better with or without this set, as the telescopic boom raises and lowers slowly either way.

Makes the excavator 10 times better

i just got this set today and i love it it is AWESOME! the motor goes super fast,the lights are bright and the switch adds so much more opportunity like you can make the motor run forward, backward and stop you can also put an axle piece on the switch instead of reaching to the battery pack.

This set is awesome!

This is a pretty good product. The parts are really cool. HOWEVER. While these are some intersting parts, this set is sold only to help supply you with power functions parts. And even so, you may want to consider buying more power functions parts before buying this set. And also, it mainly works with techinic parts.
Overall, a good set, but not for early builders and novice.

Great

This set is very useful and a lot better than the old 9v motors. The set enables you to make your creations move with the latest LEGO movement technology. This set includes all you need to start your way into the Power Functions world and to bring your LEGO creations to live. However, I think that some extra pieces would be useful...

Let The Fun Begin...

I'm building a LEGO ski resort with motorized chairlifts and a lighting system and got this set because I could use all the pieces to make a lit ski lift. after it came, I went online to get more to make more lifts, and I added up the prices of the individual pieces and instead of a good deal, this actually cost over $3 more than the individual sets. Overall, I like this set ( I love the motors and power functions sets) and would recommend it.

great parts, bad price

Great products, BUT I highly recommend that you check out the cost of the main components separately as it comes out a LOT cheaper.
