[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This set was wonderful.  Instructions are easy to follow.  The little details are phenomenal from the little foods in the refrigerator to the lawn chairs.  It's a nice size for displaying amongst my other collector sets.  I didn't use the stickers on the size because I liked the clean look instead of the 60s vibe the stickers gave.  Overall, it is one of my favorite sets to date.

The item was packaged appropriately to prevent damage. Not like a previous item that was simply placed in a shipping bag without concern for the value of the item. I was really excited to receive item undamaged.

Undamaged item

I really looked forward to getting this Van after building the VW Beetle and the T1.  My Dad owned several Volkswagen Vans including this model.  The reveiws came in fast and hard with a lot of vitriol so I was really getting nervous... was this actually the total bomb most people described it as?  Cumbersome and delicate?? Absolutely not!  I experienced none of the issues spoken about besides the occassional piece coming loose.  People deal with it!  Its not a race and at this level you should just be patient and enjoy rebuilding things if you have too, its a small price to pay for some challenge and brillance of design.   It is lights out as far as detail and no doubt about it the best VW to date.   Actually all the fuctionality built in works and adds new depth to these vehicles. I had a moment of the roof not sitting flush and yes the little knob pops of the tailgate (waaaaaaahh!)  But easy remedies and in no way took away from the experience or the finished product which in my opinion is amazing!   Lego designers sleep well tonight, job well done.  I also recommend the Space Shuttle if this set hooks you back on Legos.  It out of this world :)

To start with I had to contact Lego numerous times a so many parts were missing ( it was new and sealed) . Lego were great and finally got going again..BUT the design is terrible! Practically impossible to build as bit just fall off all over the place and simply not possible to put some parts together as it forces other bits off!!
I have build loads of more complicated sets and they go together great. I abandoned this set ( first time ever ) as it just doesn't go together… very frustrating..

Rubbish

I love the van! But not the fact that it was missing a ton of pieces in the first bag.  Even ordered some extras butt then ran into more missing pieces.

Misses A LOT Of pieces

Looks great; the outside proportions and shape are captured well, but over complicated and lacking inside. The steering takes up a lot of room for no benefit, the cab detail is compromised and the whole feature is unnecessary. The pop-top is similarly over complicated and the "canvas" very fragile and easy to damage. The rock and roller bed is too short, and the cab doors are crude with poor hinge design. There really should be a proper roof rack for the surfboard. The sliding door is excellent and both rear doors work well, but the interior is inferior to the old red/white split screen model, and indeed comparing the two this one is a backwards step. Development feels rushed. I'm not generally a fan of the Creator Expert cars, and based on this I won't be changing my mind any time soon.

Fun to build, disappointing end product

Terrible experience. Worst money spent in my entire life probably. When I try to put a piece on, 5 fall off. I wanted to go back to childhood. I will never buy Lego again that's how bad it was :( I'm throwing it away because I'm not dealing with the parts breaking over and over. I can't even finish it because it's so fragile and poor quality

First and last Lego set

The Lego set was a gift and we are extremely disappointed.  I have put it together several times.  The roof does not work properly (will fall apart), the engine is impossible - when you try to place it in the bottom everything else falls apart.  Very expensive Lego and not worth it.  Frustrated and disappointed.  Regret spending this amount of money on an item that doesn't meet expectations! Would NOT recommend!!!

Horrible

As other 1 star reviewers have said, this model is too fragile. Especially the front. Every time I try to add a hefty piece the whole lot falls apart. I am so disappointed and frustrated that on many occasions I have felt like throwing it through the window. I am on bag 8 at the moment and don't know if I can bear to carry. I have not long ago completed the typewriter, that was fragile but built like a jumbo jet in comparison to this one. Don't be tempted. I wish I hadn't been.

Hugely disappointing

I was so, so, SO excited to get this set, I ordered it the day it was released. I have the red LEGO bus too, which I keep on display. I had similar expectations for this set. Sadly, it was a disappointment.

Here are my goods and bads:
GOOD: It took a few days to build (1-2 hours a day). The interior looked slick. The sliding door was pretty cool—that actually worked well.

BAD: nothing else worked as I hoped. The engine bay was impossible to open. The engine was nothing special to look at (unlike the red bus). The front doors were not anchored very well, so super flimsy. The bumpers fell off every time I so much as looked at the vehicle. The steering mechanism that connected to the steering wheel kept dislodging (the front wheel steering kind of stayed connected). The roof seemed way over built—not sure why so much engineering went into making a simple pop-up (which didn't close very well). The scale was off too—such a big vehicle compared to the red bus or even the Jeep Wrangler.

And perhaps the saddest part—it just doesn't look like a VW bus. We have one parked in our driveway, so I'm very familiar with the shape. This wasn't it. Something was off in the boxiness of front end and the awkward roof line. The red LEGO bus was perfectly shaped. This one, not so much.

I'm sorry to report—this is my least favorite LEGO set. Ever. :(
