I purchased this as a gift for my nephew when I spent a month living with my brother's family. I bought this as a replacement to Fridge Farm (as it was discontinued), hoping the pieces would be compatible. The magnetic pieces were easier for him to get into and out of the the toy. They were thicker and when he got them close to the right spot, the magnetic portion would help him put them in. The pieces weren't compatible at all, and I was disappointed that the new pieces snap in differently. The animal sounds and songs are great. He dances along to them. The toy is easy to take along on trips with the built in bucket. However, the bucket is skinny and doesn't stand up when he is using it. So you have to take the top piece off and place it flat on the floor for him to be able to put the pieces in. Great value, neat toy. But, a step down from fridge farm.

This product was purchased for my son's first birthday instead of the Fridge Farm that has been discontinued. After seeing my niece play with the magnetic version this version is simply disappointing. Below are the pros and cons with the toy:
Pro: lightweight, portable
Cons: Not age appropriate for a one year old - requires expert fine motor skills that have not fully developed.
Pieces are small and easily go missing
The "silly" animals have the potential to confuse a developing child who is beginning to recognize familiar animals and their sounds.

I was really looking forward to the toy that was stationary when placed on the refrigerator. This will easily be another toy that will be lost in the toy box not a toy that had a specific place such as the kitchen.

Disappointed

This is a fun educational toy that different ages will enjoy. I bought it for my 15 month old son for Christmas knowing he would need help putting the pieces in the correct way and that it would be a good toy to grow with.

My 3 year old even enjoys playing with it and educating me about each animal. The toy says thing like "Did you know that dog can smell things people cant." It also makes the noise of the animals and sings a song about how you made a match if you put in matching pieces :)

For all the people that gave it a bad rating because its not magnetic like the fridge phonics this is kinda like comparing apples to oranges. Yes they are both leapfrog and about animals but they are each different. This one you can take it on the go and have a nice bucket to store them in. The fridge farm was used as a fridge toy. Not all parents like their children playing in the kitchen myself included.. That is why I never purchased the Fridge Farm for my older son.

Overall this toy is a great toy to pull out and sit with your little ones learning about animals and singing silly songs. Then when your done you put the pieces in the bucket and pull the handle up which locks the bucket from the lid coming off. I do not recommend for ages under 18 months obviously a baby under 18 months do not have the fine motor skills to use the puzzle pieces.

Great toy!

I bought this item for my 16 month old daughter. Right now, she has trouble making the animals fit in the spaces when she plays by herself but will have everyone else help her there. However, she has gotten much better at it in the two weeks we've had the toy.
Her favorite thing to do is to run around the house with the top while pressing the music button. She loves that she can make her toy "sing" to her. She will also dance while holding too.

Fun for the Music

I was very disappointed to find out that the fridge magnet version of this toy was discontinued. It had been my "go to" first birthday gift for years. We had a break in baby births so when I went looking for the fridge magent for my niece, I was told to get this instead. Not happy with this option. My kids learned how to "clean up" by putting their magnets back on the fridge. My niece throws hers in the toy box. Some pieces are already missing where as my girls had theirs up until we gave it away (reluctantly mind you, but to a good home). There are many carry around toys available for kids. The magnet version was much better and still portable as we took ours to the doctors office a few times. It's too bad toy manufacturers think they need to come up with new and improved when new kids just want the old. Sorry Leap Frog, big fail on this one, and I believe you lost a loyal customer.

We purchased this for our 1-year old grandson after seeing it at a friend's house. The sounds made when mixing one animal's front with a different animal's behind are hilarious. So far, my grandson has really only mastered taking the animal pieces out of the top and having me put different ones in. However, with time he is going to enjoy mixing up his own animals, and then learning how to make them match! Learning the sounds each animal makes is also a great part of this toy's features.

Fun toy!
