The Hogwarts Express is an absolutely fantastic set and easily my largest one so far! As a huge Harry Potter fan, this set was a dream come true. The detail on the train is incredible, from the design of the engine to the lovely touches like the passenger car interiors and the platform. The build itself was challenging in the best way, and it was so rewarding to see it all come together. Lots of minifigures to bring this set to life. The train looks amazing displayed. This is definitely one of my favorite sets in my collection, and I'd highly recommend it to any Harry Potter fan

I have had my eye on this set for quite a while now. I have friends who have it, and they applaud it as being a gorgeous display model with some truly great features and a must for any LEGO Harry Potter fan.

When I heard this set will be retiring this year it meant this might be a set I might have to pass on, until there was the fantastic insider's discount that brought this set within my budget! I jumped at it!
And I am so happy I now have this fantastic train, that is so iconic, in my collection.

This is the best Lego set I have ever purchased, I have read so many reviews why people are moaning its beyond me personally I have no complaints I loved the build I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this it was a great experience top marks to Lego.

Hogwarts Express

This was my first 18+ build and I loved it. I am a huge Harry Potter fan and have always been fascinated with trains. This is definitely designed as a display piece, therefore does not need to be built for standard tracks. I love the size and detail of the passenger car. There is a great story taking you through the Harry Potter journey ending with the new generation ready to embark on their own adventure.

As an AFOL and HP fan, this set hit many happy buttons but there are certain things that could have been done better. 
Pros
I had many WOW and happy moments building the train and the platform. So many clever ways of using bricks etc in original ways. I especially loved the arches on the platform, the stack of coal in the tender and the seats in the carriage- brilliant. The detail is amazing on the engine, tender and carriage, with some iconic scenes from the films. 
The track is a bit repetitive, but once I got into a rhythm I found it quite therapeutic. 
Cons
The middle section of the engine is a bit wobbly or not as secure as the rest of the engine. The platform does obscure the train if in front and you can't see the platform when it is behind. I have put mine to the side. I do wish they had included an older Ron and Hermione rather than the two students. My BIGGEST issue is the plaque - which has the wrong locomotive model detail (apparently) but also King Cross Station??? It is King's Cross Station, such an important detail and it is wrong! When people are paying this amount of money, every detail should be checked, rechecked and checked again.  I now have this at the back of the platform as it keeps drawing my eye. I have heard, and it may be a rumour, that Lego are going to update the plaque for the next run of the sets. I think it would be very good customer service, if those buyers who have the faulty plaque are offered an updated and correct plaque for free (proof of purchase obviously). 
Overall
This is a display set, it is not a set to be motorised or to move around a cityscape. It is big and takes up a fair amount of space.
I used my VIP points to significantly reduce the price, so would I have bought this at the full price, mmm not so sure, but I had more fun with this than the Colosseum. Though feel a bit aggrieved as I was so disappointed, for another year, that it was not Gringotts. Please can we have Gringotts in 2023. Please.

Very well designed and fun to build. Lots of detail like arm rests fold up in the passenger coach. A little disappointed that Lego did not produce wheels specifically for the the front of the locomotive, tender and coach. Instead they used wheels from another Lego train set. So you wind up 27 wheels of which only 18 are used in the build. You'll have 9 left over. These wheels are locomotive drive wheels, so they have a counter weight and extra hole. For all the detail, Lego should have made proper wheels for this application.
 Couple of typos on the sticker sheet too.

This set does look good as a *cough* FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR display piece, I can't deny - but the fact that it is so oversized, not track compatible, etc. is so irredeemably disappointing. This set comes with many minifigures but for what reason? The train is practically the height of a 2 story building compared to them. Even custom modifications can't save that aspect. My worry now is that if this set does poorly, future train sets may be questioned due to falsely perceived lack of interest.

Why lego? Why?

I was so excited for this that I didn't think to read too many of the details. My mistake. It's not motorized at all. And it isn't compatible with normal tracks. Which wouldn't be that bad if you could at least get a set to build more track. This would be amazing around the Christmas tree! But I guess that is why it isn't motorized. With out any more track, it's not going any where any ways.

Hot and a miss!

My biggest issue and it's a big one. I wanted a motorized train to run along side my Lionel Hogworts Express. Very sad. Maybe some day you'll get it right. It's  a beautiful set but just mainly for display...mostly. sad sad sad... I love lego. Don't forget...even us old adults like to play....not just look at.

Very Sad...so close but far away

For the extortionate cost of this set... you'd think they'd actually put the correct station on the plaque you receive. 'King cross' isn't correct and for a collectors edition I'm so disappointed there wasn't enough attention to detail to spot such a simple mistake!
