Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. I've been hoping they would put "Lonesome Dove" on BluRay DVD. To me its one of, if not the very best Western Movies ever Made! I totaly enjoyed watching it when it was on TV. Only back then, they only played it in three parts on TV, because it's a long movie. We had to wait a week between the three parts they played on TV. But now I have it to watch all at one setting or the best parts as I wish anytime. On 1080p with a 42' plasma TV and with 5.1 surround it's like your right there in the movie with them. I rate it 5 stars.

One of The Best Western Movies I've ever saw!

Lonsome Dove was a television series with a splended cast and superb acting. I watch Lonsome Dove several times a year and never tire of it. I consider Lonsome Dove one of the best westerns ever made along with The Searchers and Once upon A Time In The West. The Blu-ray transfer was excellent. Beautiful cinematography.

Classic

I thought they did a terrific job on the transfer to 1080p as far as PQ goes. The night scenes were pretty drab. They just don't have the transfer on those right, & are very gritty.

There is a lot of browns, but this is a western, & it is expected. The vibrancy however does shine in the scenes where colors are available. I read on IMDB that most of this movie was shot on Location in NM. Most of NM I have seen was brown.

The audio was a little like sitting in a tunnel. I knocked the rating for that. I really was unimpressed & frankly it was a little disappointing. I would however recommend this movie especially if you are a LD fan.

I also knocked it for the extras. I have seen much more information in cheap DVD's. This is very plain. I am one of those people that think BD movies for the most part are WAY over priced...At least give us a little something.

Overall I would this is a good movie. & I gave it a 4.5. I paid $20.00 for it new. I can't complain about that too much for a 384 min. movie. I hope the sequels come out on Blu-ray!

I have to add that this movie was enhanced for widescreen TV's (meaning it plays as a full screen on my set) Great Job...I really don't like regular widescreen, but the enhanced are great! I hope to see many more like this
