Hofer Hardcover. <div>This substantial volume features approximately 100 folk art objects acquired by the avant-garde sculptor Elie Nadelman and his wife, Viola Speiss Flannery Nadelman, between 1919 and 1934 when the couple were forced to find a buyer for their vast collection of 70,000 objects. The lion?s share was acquired by the New-York Historical Society in 1937.<i>Making it Modern</i>'s fresh approach and in-depth essays contribute to our understanding of folk art and its profound influence on modernism.<br /><br />The works are presented in full-colour plates and cover a huge range of geographic areas and media, from Pennsylvania German folk art; imposing large-scale wooden sculptures and oil portrait paintings; nineteenth-century cast-iron, tin, pewter, and wooden toys; drawings and watercolours; household tools and small objects, such as carved butter moulds; to the large and iconic carved wooden figure of the fire chief Harry Howard?, acquired by the couple in 1936.<br /><br />Many of these works are arranged in groups to resemble the way in which the Nadelmans exhibited their most treasured works at their own purpose-built Museum of Folk and Peasant Arts in Riverdale, NY. Archival photographs of these interiors evoke the ambiance of the Riverdale museum as conceived by the couple in the 1920?s and 1930?s.<br /><br />More than just a catalogue, this new book explores a number of key themes vital to the study and understanding of folk art, notably the definition of folk art (both as the Nadelmans would have understood it and as it is generally accepted today), the interrelation of folk art and modernist art, the influence of folk art on Nadelman?s sculpture; and the relationship between American and European folk art. For example a tin wind-up toy with waltzing couples from the last quarter of the 19th century is juxtaposed with The Four Seasons, a terracotta figural group created by Nadelman for his lead patron, Helena Rubenstein.<br /><br /><i>Making it Modern</i> is a significant contribution to our study and understanding of folk art, and Nadelman?s own very appealing and engaging sculpture.<br /></div>
