Looked for a light quiet portable generator for our new to us Travel Trailer. Reviews on the MXR3500 were great but only a few on the 3800 and one bad YouTube review. The price was great so took a chance. It fired up first pull and was quiet. Ran AC in trailer which was rated for 2500 watts. Started up first pull on 3 other occasions. Bought it for a trip next season so here's hoping it performs long term as expected in 6 months.

First Time RV owner

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Bought this generator for easy winter starting during power outages. I can keep it inside so it stays warm so when its extremely cold outside it starts right up no problem. Easy to carry around. Love it!

Great Portable Generator

When I received this I immediately installed an hour meter before I started it. I used 5w30 conventional oil for break in. Ran the generator for an hour with varying loads at 50% max. Changed the oil and cleaned the metal shavings off the magnetic dipstick. Installed more 5w30 conventional and will change again at 5hrs. I took this thing ice fishing and it sat outside in -26c overnight and in the morning it fired right up on the second pull and ran for 2 more hours charging battery's. I was very impressed with how well it started in the cold. Only ran at about 400 watts to charge up all my battery's but I will test it this summer running my ac in the camper. Great so far.

Excellent Value

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Amazing what you can get on sale if you exercise patience.  The Maxpeedingrod MXR3800 was on sale during Amazon Days for $389.00 from Walmart.  It was $70.00 off the original price, so I took the savings and bought a 3 year extended warranty and still had $30.00 savings. Hard to go wrong on that kind of a deal. If it breaks it gets fixed or returned. This is a generator with minimal advanced features.  I do not need a carbon monoxide shutdown feature since it will only be used outdoors. Remote start would be nice but once again, I'm not disappointed that it doesn't at this price. Just make sure you check the oil periodically and you won't miss the automatic "low oil shutdown" feature offered on other generators. 3200 watts of power is sufficient to run my travel trailer. I've just completed its first oil change after 20 hours runtime. I cleaned the magnetic dip stick many times during this breakin period and yes, you will get some filings every time.  I have not yet run more than 1500 watts during this break in period. It weighs 1.4 pounds more than my Honda EU2000, produces 1200 watts more and makes slightly more noise (as it should).  If the noise is bothersome, make a noise reduction enclosure by leaning plywood, OSB or Styrofoam panels against the generator. A simple noise reduction trick that is cheap yet very effective. If you bought 3 of these generators at the price I paid,  you'd have 2 left if you destroyed one for about the same price as the Honda EU2200 companion generator and you'd be making way more power. The MXR 3800 comes with the parallel ready feature and the connecting cables. It starts easily, produces conditioned power and sips gas while in Eco Mode. I would purchase this generator at full price and would be pleased with the price and performance.

Excellent Price, Great Performance MXR 3800

Great little generator.  Great sale price too.  Works as advertised.  Pretty quiet too, which is a plus for use at a campsite.  Comes with everything you need to get it up and running except oil.  Would have given it a 5 star review if I didn't have to go out again.  Surely the manufacturer could ship the unit with a half litre bottle of oil.

Portable Inverter Generator

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Seems to be a good lightweight generator for camping as well as emergency home power for a great price.  Unit started on the first pull after filling with oil and gas. It did seem to be a bit louder than advertised according to phone dB app. as I do not have an actual meter.  Have only run it for a few hours camping so time will tell how it holds up.

Great portable inverter generator for the money

This generator has a lot of power for its size. It's rated at 3200 running watts and I was able to pull about 3150 before it shut down so I'm happy with those results. I broke-in the generator for about 5 hours at 25-50% load and changed the oil every hour and a half. Those first 3 oil changes have a scary looking amount of metal floating in them. From what I've seen, this is pretty normal for these cheaper machines but they do ok as long as you do several break-in oil changes to get the metal out of there. It comes with a magnetic dip stick but very little of the metal in the oil was magnetic so I'm assuming it's all aluminum. The only other issue I had was trying to restart  the generator while the engine was still warm. I'm not sure if it vapor locked or what it did but it was difficult to restart when warm. Cold starts were never an issue. It's reasonably quiet. It's  fairly fuel efficient but the tank is only one gallon so you probably won't get much more than 1/2 a day between fill ups. It comes with a parallel wiring kit which was a nice surprise. It doesn't come with engine oil so buy plenty to do several early oil changes. It takes less than a quart of oil to fill it from empty. Overall it's nearly the same size and weight as a Honda 2200i generator but this one puts out a lot more power. Only time will tell about reliability but so far I'd definitely recommend it.

Very powerful for its size

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It was hard to start and I had to work with it to get it to start it took long time and it kept dying on me. I added oil and gas but the issue maybe from the carb. It was smoking kind of dark to blue smoke. I dont like it in comperison to the ryobi generator. I did buy the extended warranty but I did not use it yet.

starting and performance

As a few others have said, this generator is very hard to start.  I have only run it as a "test" well less than an hour.  The issue is starting. It takes very strong pulls and repeated pulls. Sometimes 10-20.  There is no way my wife could start this thing. No other machine I have is close to this hard to start. When it starts it seems to run rough. 

On the full disclosure as positives: when it starts, it delivers power as needed. It is quiet and the economy feature is a plus.

We live in a remote place (a small Hawaiian island) where we absolutely need an emergency generator. A complicator is that there are no Walmart store to drive to to take this back. I tried an online return getting a "Sorry, we're unable to process this part of your request." Not sure whether to pursue this more, or just keep it and know it is an inferior product. 

The thing to think about if you are in a situation like ours:  the trade off between cheap and reliable brand.  It is obvious now, I should have spent more on a reliable brand.
