The title of this collection of Millie Jackson's work for Jive Records is somewhat misleading in that it focuses only on the singer's output from the 1980s and '90s (and does not include any of her fine--and in many ways her best--material from the '70s). By the '80s, Jackson had firmly established her saucy, provocative recording persona, and that personality comes through clearly on such tracks as the hit single "Hot! Wild! Unrestricted! Crazy Love." Jackson was also known for her spoken word interludes, delivered in something of a proto-rap style. Sadly, these are not included on the VERY BEST! Still, this 11-track set is a fine sampler of Jackson's later career, and her soulful, rough-hewn vocals and scintillating themes hold up beautifully.
