Great tool. Very powerful, and easy to handle. You can easily connect it to your shop vacuum, which is a great option and helps keep your workplace clean. M18 5Ah battery allows you to run your tool on highest setting for about an hour. Felt like M18 5Ah battery worked best, and also gave the tool the right balance, making it easier to handle. Very good tool. Im highly satisfied.

Wonderful sander

I originally purchased for a wood working project but decided to use the sander to prepare a chip body for paint. Worked extremely well even when put through its paces. Also, saved me tons of time and did a great job sanding through old enamel paint and surface rust. Currently using it for wood working and I am also impressed with the quality job it does.

Milwaukee M18 Orbital Sander

This tool works amazing! Purchased it a month ago and have been using it daily for making walnut charcuterie boards and coffee tables.  Does the job perfectly.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great tool as always from Milwaukee. This sander has up to 6 different speeds depending on your project. It is a bit heavy when you add a battery. The attached dust catcher catches some of the sawdust, but not all. It came with attachments to use with a shopvac but I haven't used them yet. Purchased a multipack of 5 Inch 8 Hole sanding disks separately and they fit perfectly .

The Truth About The Random Orbit Sander

Great tool, very easy to use. Can achieve a lot with this. my only issue was using the 1.5v batteries with it, they drain pretty fast. Besides that, good product so far!

All about the M18

I expected much more from this sander, but it was a big let down.

I've used a *yellow* orbital sander for 10 years with great results. It's a total beast and I finally wore the brushes out. While waiting for the replacements to arrive in the mail, I took a chance on this cordless version. I have a half a dozen cordless Milwaukee tools that I've been extremely happy with, so I took this as an opportunity to take another step up in quality and convenience.

Right away I liked the design but found the rotation was sorely lacking. I'm talking less than half as efficient as I'm used to, the amount of sanding needed to eliminate the dreaded squiggle marks is simply not acceptable. On top of that, I drained a full battery in about 15 of normal use, not overworking the tool at all. The dust collection was not very effective, leaving much more residual dust in the area than I'd get from the yellow competitor.

I don't often feel compelled to write reviews, but in this case I had no choice but share my experience. Sadly a thumbs down.

Swing and a miss from Milwaukee

Milwaukee, help! I love your tools, I have many. This orbital sander, as stated by others is faulty. The dust collection system will not stay closed. It's so frustrating to buy a Milwaukee product that doesn't work as advertised. Seems like a major oversight and such a mess

Dust Collection

Full disclosure, I'm a small-time DIY who likes to buy quality tools so I only have to cry once. I'm not in the trades.

I had recently purchased another company's cordless sander and used it on a DIY yard project for about 20 days when I came across the Milwaukee sander and a tool kit at a decent price. Milwaukee is a much higher quality brand than the "other brand" I had purchased. I returned the other brand as some of the tools had small issues that were causing me concern, and I picked up the Milwaukee set. I already own a handful of M12 tools, so this was my step up into the M18 platform (with a 7-tool set + the sander as a separate purchase).

There is no doubt that the Milwaukee sander is better built than the previous one. However, it may be overbuilt for my preference. After continuing the project with the Milwaukee M18 Random Orbital Sander, I find myself wishing for the other one!

The reasons I like "the other one" better than the Milwaukee, even though it's clearly not as nice of a tool:
1. The Milwaukee tool is too heavy, even with a 3.0 XC battery. I find that by the end of a very small sanding job, my forearm is tired. I was doing 3 times the sanding with the "other one" and never got tired once. This thing is a big, heavy beast.
2. The grip is uncomfortable. It's hard to describe, but the way the palm rest is designed, my fingers have to curl under it and "pinch it" to hold it. With this big heavy beast running, it really just doesn't feel good to have to pinch it to hold it for so long.
3. Again, due to the size, grip, and weight, doing anything other than sanding on a large flat surface becomes uncomfortable fast. For example, when cutting a bunch of 2x6's to length, I like to sand the cut lines to remove any splinters or tears from the saw. I hang the 2x6's off the sawhorse and I have 10 surfaces to sand (4 edges of each side of the cut = 8, plus the two ends). That's a lot of holding this sander one-handed at regularly changing angles. If I'm cutting 10 boards in a row, I need to move this thing quickly around the edges of the board and move on. The "other one" could zip around quickly, while this one is a big, unwieldy, heavy beast that I'm pinching to hold.
4. The on-off switch doesn't fit easily, even with my large-sized hands. You're supposed to be able to turn it on with your thumb on the left side of the palm rest, and turn it off with your ring finger on the other side. However, in practice, unless you have this sitting on the large, flat work surface when you turn it on, the awkward holding position means my thumb/ring finger don't line up very well, and I often have to hold it up in the air and use my other hand to turn it on or off. If I tried to get my thumb to the power button, it would fall for sure. (See the attached photos)
5. One other small thing (for the design team): when you lay it on its back to change out the sanding pad, it has a tendency to roll over onto its dust-bin side. It'd be nice if you could throw it on its back and have it remain stable while you changed out the pads (which is easier with 2 hands).

I've only had this for a day or so, but it's the day after I returned the other one so I have a back-to-back comparison and these items became readily apparent.

Some of the things I like about this one:
1. It's a beast. If I drop it, roll it, or use it for self defense I feel it'll still work afterwards.
2. Less apparent feel of vibration on my hand when using it. If it just wasn't so dang bulky.
3. The dust collection works way better than the "other one." I haven't had the common dust bin issues (yet) since I just got it... but compared to the other guy, this actually sucks dust through the holes and deposits it in the bin. That's nice.
4. It works with the Milwaukee tools I now own in the M18 range.
5. The battery (XC 3.0) seems to last a good bit longer than the "other guy."

I have a sailboat hull nowhere near a power source that I plan to use this on. I had no fears with the "other one" but with this one I'm really concerned about taking it on. I might have to return this sander and pick up a standalone in another brand to meet my needs.

If only I were sanding large, flat items all day. If I were, this would be a no brainer! As of now, I'm still not convinced if I'm going to keep it or not. "The best sander is the one you have on you." I may find myself leaving this one at home...
