This is the only wood glue I use. It does what its suppose too and looks good, dries good and is priced good.

Excellent wood filler

I have a 1930's viintage cabin, and there is always some repair to a window sill, threshold, siding that birds have pecked at, etc.  This is the only product that stands up to Minnesota seasons.  The real magic is in the hardener; this stuff literally turns wood rock hard, and provides a solid base for the wood filler.

For those that run out of the small tube of catalyst, remember that more is not better.  Always err on the low side of catalyst addition.

I had to replace a door lock bur the new mortise was at a different level than old.  I filled the old with the filler, sanded flat and made a new hole for the mortise.  A carpenter who was leveling the doors was impressed on how he the new arrangement looked.I've also replaced exterior rotted.garage trim and after painting it looked new.

This stuff is awesome

I used wood hardener on the year-over-year damage to the front edge of the front door threshold and I am now rebuilding that edge with the wood filler. I need to stop for the day because the sun's coming around and it's getting too hot. 

People remark about how difficult it is to eyeball the 16:1 ratio and how fast it sets up. Here's where your 6th grade math comes in handy. 1/4 teaspoon of hardener to 4 teaspoons of filler (which is about all you should be dealing with at one time anyway). And 1/4 teaspoon of the hardener is about a 1 inch simple squeezed out line.

Repairing (not replacing) wood threshold

First - I have probably used over 20 cans of this product over the past two years - so I know it well.  I had to restore 4x10 redwood structural beams under a deck that had been damaged by over 50 years of water running down the sides.

After thoroughly removing the damaged wood and then applying an epoxy sealer to the wood fibers, I used the wood filler with a putty knife.  I then used a powerful orbital sander to smooth the surface before staining with two coats of solid color stain.  I could not be more pleased with the results.

Yes - I have made some mistakes but learned from them. First you do not need a lot of hardener - I have never run out of hardener.  In fact, when I used too much hardener, the working time was much too short.  The working time is short to begin with, so you need to have a plan and work fast.  The warmer the weather, the shorter the working time.

The beauty of the product is that in the first few minutes, it is  very soft and can be easily applied into small cracks and crevices - but you need to work fast.  It also sands well and takes solid stain well - but you do need to use at least two coats to cover the filler well.

The absolute best product for major repairs!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have to say I am quite impressed by this little tool, it has definitely surpassed my expectations. So far I have used it to patch up some nail holes and basic wear and tear on the corners of some of our walls. It's so easy to use and it so fast. The color is nearly perfect for anything that is even close to white, our walls have a tint of blue and are not white white. You will know its there but no one else would even notice, I had a hard time myself finding the nail hole i patched just to show my wife. The colored wax builds up upon itself as you keep going over it so it forms to any shape and size you're using it on. I like that it's easy to just pull the string to access more instead of having to deal with any kind of sharpening tool and losing some of the product itself in the process. This pencil has become a great help around the house and keeps our small repairs very simple. This will also be a much cheaper alternative rather than replacing or repainting whole areas or walls. Very happy with the results and can't wait to keep up with the honey-do list a little easier now.

Quick fix for small projects

This is a great product! I had a few parts of a house that needed some love before I could paint it. For example, there was a 4x4 newel post outside that had a big chip in it. I cleaned out the hole with compressed air, mixed up a batch of filler and stuffed it into the hole. I was able to fill a few other areas of the house, and when I got back the filler was dry and ready for sanding/shaping. The total time from filling the hole to sanding was probably a maximum of 30 minutes. I can't even tell where the chip is on the newel post now and it has been 2 years since I applied it! Great stuff!

Easy to use and great for under painted materials!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've used this filler for years and it excels in specific applications. From large patches to scratch fixes this filler is durable under tough conditions. 

Simple scratch and gouge fixes are easy to do but you need to be very careful with the amount you prepare. The hardener is supposed to be added at a ratio of 16:1 but it is hard to gauge. Instead, I use it sparingly because the worst thing that happens is that it takes longer to set. When you use too much, you don't have a lot of working time and pressing it into scratches can leave a chunky texture at the end of the window. When you sand it, you want the surface smooth but not too smooth. A slightly textured surface holds onto finishes better. It also makes blending easier. 

If you do large fixes, it is better to fill the bulk of the voids with wood and then add the hardener as the topping that you can sculpt. Filling a large void with filler only takes too long and the repair is likely to crack. You should also get the liquid wood hardener to treat the surface you are tying into. Sealing up the grain will minimize the seasonal swelling (especially for exterior repairs) if the wood doesn't swell, the patch will be very durable. 

I've used this filler for molding repairs on a historic building and as crack filler in woodwork. It doesn't really like stain on the first coat but if you apply it heavy, you can get it to look reasonably well. Most of my applications are using paint or a solid stain as a coating. 

Once sealed, this repair will last. I have exterior repairs that have made it through multiple seasons without issue. Great product and workable during and after it sets. Clean up right away because this will stick to tools like glue and need to be sanded off. Be aware of your breathing, the smell is strong and the dust from sanding should not be inhaled.

Over the course of many years I have periodically used the plastic wood with good results.   Given that has been some time, I read the directions and found the “helpful “ admonishment to mix 16:1.  How, pray tell, does one do such a measure?   I seem to recall in the past to start with a golf ball size and add harding agent about an inch long, to assure time to apply but then have a hardened outcome.   I used this past guidance, rather it cal from an “old timer” or previous directions and it seems to be good.  Can Minwax not find a way to incorporate this info into the directions?  Come on man (Joe Biden quote), give it a try!

Good product: bad directions

Hard to measure the 16:1 ratio.  There is not enough hardener.  You have to eyeball or approximate the ratio. Paint does not adhere to it very well.  You should provide more hardener instead of that tiny tube.
