[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recently tried the Minwax Color Wash Transparent Layering Color on a small furniture project using my Purdy XL Sprig paint brush, and it worked pretty well. The brush held the color evenly and allowed me to apply a smooth, consistent layer without streaks. The Minwax color wash went on subtly, enhancing the wood grain as expected

I have purchased many different stains and clear coats over the years and I like the way the water based stain reacts with the burnt wood. Wipes off easily on the burnt grain and absorbs into the harder non burnt grain. I would recommend this product to anyone.

Works great with burnt wood

Very easy to work with on home projects. Little to no odor and when working on large pieces that need stained on both sides, you can just wait roughly an hour and flip and coat the next side. I was able to cover about 30-40 sqft of material with less than a quarter of the can.

Only complaint is that it dries a bit too fast and you have to work quickly in small sections to make sure you wipe off the excess before it dries.

Quick easy stain

I find this product unusable.  The only way it can be applied without looking bad was to have one person 
wiping immediately (1 second) behind the person applying the stain.  On a small shelf (15x24), you could 
not cover the shelf before it dried and left blotches.  So, one person wipes on and one wipes off.  You have 
to do no more than 6 inches width at a time which still left blotches on the overlap because it dries 
within seconds.  Any corners or bends (like the shelf edges cannot be made to look good.  
There isn't enough time to do the top, the edge and cleanup the bottom edge before it sets so you end 
up with blotches no matter what.  I'm now looking to resand the entire project and start over with another 
product.  Highly recommend avoiding this water-based stain for any project - it's impossible to make 
even smaller projects look good.  I did use the prestain conditioner and applied using a foam brush.

Save yourself hours of rework - not recommended

I bought a number of quarts of the previous version of the semi-transparent water based color stain. The covered/but also let the grain show through. At some point the exterior label in the quarts changed and so did the stain itself. The current stain is like paint, and is not even close to semi-transparent - why did you change and will you ever offer the previous formula again?

The color is Honey Comb if it matters. It is more like paint, and is hard to get an even coverage on a small magazine holder I built. When you try to get it even, by then it is too tacky because it has begun to dry. It raises the grain (I know they tell you to use pre stain) so badly that the project felt like I had made it out of pallets instead of hardwood and it had been finished with fine sandpaper. I see no reason to ever use this stuff again. Lesson learned.

Terrible and hate this water based wood stain

I've never encountered a stain that dries so fast. You cant use it even in small areas at a time because you cant blend multiple sections of a small table for example. The working time needs to be extended substantially to make this any use. Unbelievable mess.

Dries so fast impossible to apply evenly

I spent a long time with the minwax sample book to try and find a water based semi transparent stain to match existing woodwork. Pecan was, according to the sample sheet, an excellent choice. Now that I've bought a quart and applied it for a few seconds to a sample piece of wood before wiping it down, I find that the “real” color is waaaay off. Not a little bit. 50 shades, maybe more (e.g. Mahogany vs light pine). What a waste of time and money. How in the world can I determine if a custom color works for my project when the sample sheet is useless? Please help. I'd like to use your product, but I don't know how to find a color that works.

How can I pick a color when the samples are wrong?

I make furniture professionally. This product was spec'd by a client. It dries so quickly that it is nearly impossible to get an even finish. 
It says not recommended for large sources like floors. 
I would not use this on anything larger than one sq ft. 
By far THE most difficult stain I have ever used. 
I may have to remake the bench I am working on because of this product. I did many samples to test. But they were all 12”x12”. Truly horrible.
