Instructions Clarity

Used for a outdoor art display and worked great, only needed two coats and it dried super quickly. if applying liberally be aware if there is drippage that can go under piece that it is clean quickly.

6 hours is the minimum drying time for sanding/recoating. I counsel patience. 12 - 24 hours is what I have always followed and never had a problem. I usually apply 5 coats (which may be extreme). The final finish is spectacular, especially after curing for a minimum of 48 hours. If you're in a hurry and don't have the luxury of time use the Minwax water-based varnish. I'm an ol' guy have used spar varnish for the past 30 years and it's never let me down..

Patience Yields Best Results

I am very happy with the outcome of this finish. I put 3 light coats on an antique dresser that I plan on using as a sink base. I did a light sand between coats and the 3rd coat totally changed the look becoming quite glossy. I believe it will be great for repelling water. The only thing to keep in mind is that the color is not clear, perhaps a bit orange. I did the work outside as it does have some fumes.

Love the finish!

I used spar urethane glossy finish for an oak table top. I used Minwax stain prep, Minwax stain to start with, sanding when directed by instructions. Long smooth stroked with a 2" brush does the job nicely. I think it looks great! I hope it holds up well to regular use. :)

Nice looking finish.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Had purchased  Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane recently to use for my cabinets. This was so easy to use and the finish looks very beautiful. Looking to do more home projects with this  Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane

Great

I stained and coated 2x a 12" piece of oak, which I left outside and totally exposed for a whole year in Massachusetts. Snow fell on it, UV hit it directly. I covered half of it with opaque tape first … and after the year was over, washed it and removed the tape. There were *absolutely* no signs of aging, cracking, nothing. Couldn't tell which side had been protected. In my book, that is a A+.

Laughs at the elements

My hobbies include making rustic art woodworking projects. The material;s are often reclaimed lumber of which most are designed to endure the midwest's outdoor elements. I am often asked for product referrals and do not hesitate to make the reference of Marine Spar Varnish being used to product teak and mahogany wood on salt water craft. If it can endure these elements, think what it will do in one's backyard.

I still refer to it as "Marine Spar Varnish."

I have been a professional woodworker for 25 years and I can tell you that every product that Minwax makes is beyond excellent. Most of the furniture that I restore is from the 1850's and no one can tell the difference from 1850 stain to today's stain. I will not use anything else.

Minwax Product Support

It would be really helpful if they put oil based on the front of the oil-based product. It is just too confusing to put out an oil-based product and a water-based product and not label both of them clearly. I have indoor paneling and not find out I had an oil-based product until I had already started using it. I didn't realize that helmsman had both water based and oil-based. It's a problem.

Needs better labeling

I've used many different types of clear coat finishes over the years, spray, brush and wipe on, and this is the most difficult product I've ever used. I HIGHLY suggest using the very best brush you can buy. Anytime I use a new product, I research the info and videos to look for best practices prior to application. I can't get the streaks out of my finish no matter what I try. I'm sure that this is a highly durable product if successfully applied. You will need to be extremely diligent in technique, practice and spare no expense on a professional brush. Probably an outstanding product, but there are much easier clear coats to work with.

Application is Difficult!
