I love this product. It gives a beautiful finish, and I can apply as many coats as needed to get the look I want. I usually apply about 6 coats to get a nice even semi-gloss finish on pine. 

I used this product to finish a pine countertop that I made in our downstairs bathroom, and my wife loved the look of it so much that she asked me to strip the BIG kitchen table top I had made years ago, and refinish it with this product.

I like that I can apply it easily with cheap dust-free cloths and have no brush marks, and that I can simply coat it again as needed over time due to wear.

I used this finish to coat a table I made from some kind of Birch and Walnut. I have used Minwax products in the past and have enjoyed their performance. I am fairly new to doing this, only about 4 years. I sanded the surface after planing...60 grit, 120 grit, 150 grit and then 220 grit. Between coats of the Minwax Tung Oil coats, I sanded with 220 grit and an orbital sander. I only applied 2 coats. I will say that on the first application on the table top surface I did pour the finish on and it sank directly into the wood. I had to take a belt sander and took it down to bare wood and then reapply by placing the material on a cloth and then applying. Apart from that, the finish was fairly easy to apply. I was really happy with the smoothness of the surface after both applications. There was a slight darkening of the wood after the application. I actually wanted more darkening on the walnut. Overall, I am happy with the results.

I have made Black Walnut tables and benches using this Tung Oil, I love it, makes Black Walnut grain & colours pop. I just made a Charcuterie board from Black Walnut as well, was wondering if this product is safe to have meats and cheeses on it, NOT being used a cutting board.

Can I use this Tung Oil on a  Charcuterie Board?

I have been using this product frequently for 12 months and find it excellent for finishing gun stocks. Photos are from my most recent refinishing a rifle stock that was slightly damaged in shipping. I stripped and sanded the stock and applied Black Cherry stain. Applied 4 coats of Minwax Tung Oil following directions except for buffing. I prefer not to buff off the excess. I leave it after brushing on lightly and it does not run. I lightly steel wool between coats. On my first gun stock project I buffed it and found it unnecessary on my second project. I also used this on walnut pistol grips with excellent results.

Continued Offering Of Quality

Hi, we are currently building a cottage and have used tung oil on our tounge and grove pine ceiling. It looks amazing. In our one bathroom we have pine on the ceiling and in our other bathroom we have used the pine for a accent wall. I would love to know if I can use the tung oil in the bathroom on the pine. Will it protect the pine from mildew and all the moisture and humidity that happen in the bathroom. Is there a certain procedure for application. Thanks Diane

For anyone that wants to have an oil finish, THIS IS NOT TUNG OIL. I would love to tell you what it is, but Minwax does not list what this product contains on the packaging. It appears I may have to scrap what I am working on, make a new piece, and use real tung oil instead of whatever this piece of absolute garbage is.

This product is marketed like it's tung oil. It's not. It contains some tongue oil but it's actually just a non-food safe finish. Completely let down by this product and it ruined my new butcher block countertop. If you are looking for tung oil on your butcher block countertops make sure it's pure tung oil and not this product. Very disappointed.

Not Tung Oil

How is it legal for a company to use TUNG OIL on their name and not be TUNG OIL? I went to my local hardware store and when I couldn't find tung oil, I asked and the attendant told me this was it. It is not a clear finish but rather darkened my NATURAL cherry. I'm so upset! I worked very hard on this project and minwax has ruined it with the deceiving advertising!

STOP USING THIS NAME
