I bought these chairs for a friend and he said return them something smells when he opened the box

I bought 4 chairs because looked like a very good deal- a $578 chair for only $89! There is no one on this planet who would value this chair over $80 . I noticed a month later that Modway changed their valuation and dropped the price to $ 78. 
Besides that, the first chair I assembled had a problem with one of the front legs, but I decided to fix it myself. The last one had a defect to the chair frame and needed to be returned. Walmart was great in assisting me with this problem.
