I wanted a small-footprint, powered subwoofer for my flight sim rig to provide LFE from the surround sound, and this is just perfect, it blends nicely with the Yamaha mains, and can easily provide the rumble of the jet engines in the "cockpit" without sounding like an earthquake. I would only caution purchasers if you are trying to fill a huge room, you will end up overdriving the subwoofer acoustically (I don't mean the amplifier, I mean you will make it sound boomy and unrealistic to make an 8" cone fill a large room) but in a small to medium sized space (perfect for a flight sim rig, this thing fills the space with a tight bass that adds that touch of realism). At normal volumes you don't get port chuffing (where the sub port sounds like heavy breathing) It's also small enough to tuck away without a problem. Setup is about as simple as it gets, plug in power, plug in RCA cable from LFE channel, play sound, adjust crossover and volume to sound good. enjoy! I found the volume at about 1/3 and crossover just above 40hz, sounded really nice and added a subtle rumble to sound (played the ride of the valkyrie scene from Apocalypse now and the explosions were tight and realistic). If you are looking for the monster Monolith sub the size of a filing cabinet that has the power of a tactical nuke, this is not that, but it's also 10% the price, and 5% the weight!

I have this paired with the the MM-5R desktop speakers and it compliments them very well. It provides that little extra oomph at the low end to let the MM-5Rs handle the rest.

More power than you need for most PC tasks and plenty left for when you really want to feel the sound.

great product

I agree with another reviewer - this sub pairs great with AudioEngine desktop speakers. I'm in a 150 sqft office. This setup is paired with my work desktop computer, and I just use the bass management of my sound card (crossover set to 90Hz). I've been listening for about a week now, and have yet to hear a low note missing that I can hear in headphones. I'd go ahead and call it overkill for a computer speaker setup, but why not have great music when you are at a desk for 8 hours a day?

To be nice to my co-workers, I never play any louder than 75 or 80 dB.

Excellent subwoofer for my office setup

My new recording studio is a much smaller room (8ft x 9ft) than my previous studio, and this subwoofer works PERFECT for it! Great response, and perfect for smaller spaces. I placed it underneath my desk and it provides just the right subs when I am evaluating my mixes. I officially recommend it.

Perfect for my small recording space

This was a perfect drop-in replacement when I had to upgrade my receiver that died -- the previous receiver had the sub amp built into it, so my old subwoofer needed an amp -- it was easier to simply buy this one instead and replace it wholesale.

Someone mentioned the "break in" period on these things, and that is 110% the case. I honestly didn't hear much coming out of it except when my receiver's automated adjustment was sending a full-blast signal to it. A day or two later during normal use (I had kept the volume dial on the back at about 60% or so) it seemed to just quietly "come to life" and fill the lower portion of my system's sound profile. Now, it's a nice and steady performer when needed.

As a bonus, because it's not down-firing but directional, I am able to cheat a little bit and place it on a shelf more central to the speaker setup, rather than in a corner facing inward. This seems to more equitably disperse the low notes throughout the room compared to other locations.

Excellent subwoofer for the money!

I bought two. I use them with my Spica TC50's. Spica went through the trouble to time align there speakers so I made stands to keep the sub's closer to the Spica's. They are not in mono bass they are in stereo like the speakers(point source).The stands hold the subs and put speakers at the right height.

Subs for my Spicas

Use this to compliment a pair of 5" desktop speakers as a small room audio system running off an Alexa. The crossover is turned all the way up, as the mains don't have much bass at all. Works well for this purpose, and could easily compliment bigger mains.

Cheap thump

The living room where I have my TV/sound setup is only a few hundred square feet, and this is perfect for my needs. I'm not an audio expert but this thing gets a deep enough response for my ears! Does great with both music and movies. It's also a great size for smaller homes/apartments. 

The auto on/off function has worked fine for me so far. Buy it!

Shakes the Living Room!

The speaker arrived well packaged.  I am used to hiding my bass but this one is easy on the eyes.  With a little thought and time I dialed it in for my small over garage build out theater  Volume is at about a 4 without what I call distortion.  I'd guess a larger dedicated home theater could open it up more.  But the power is there.

Punchy bass

Thought this would be a good little sub to round out my 2 channel system to give it a little bit on the low end.
Sub worked fine for like a week or 2 and I noticed it started humming, thought it was because of a new piece of gear I introduced to the system but it was not.
Turn on sub no humming, introduce sound to it and it would start humming after it came on with auto on.
Unplugged sub audio cable and the sub would continue to have low volumn hum.
Pretty disappointed in this sub, if they could only solve this hum issue that seems to affect this sub pretty bad from what i read in the reviews.
Should of known better...........
