It has very helpful information on the back of the bag, regarding how thick to put the layer, and how to create humidity under the plants, which helps them grow and stay healthy. This also helps you save water. The Little Red lava rocks are also nicer to look at, then just plain dirt

I knew the bags would be small. THAT is not the issue.  The photos are very misleading, especially the one with the succulent plants.  There were maybe 10 pieces that were an inch...all the rest were HUGE.  2-3 1/2" rocks! I bought these for mixing with my other non-organic media pebbles
