[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] There is so much included with this pottery kit. Everyone here is right handed, but it lets you use it either way. Just move the arm and flip a switch, and it spins the other direction. There is also a switch to change the speeds. I'm glad it came with 3 clay blocks, because I was able to use one to show the kids how to use it, and then they each got one to use themselves My favorite part s that the clay hardens without the need of a super hot oven.

Kids are loving it

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The setup is very easy. The assembly of the pottery wheel is very simple. Kneading the clay was a bit difficult but I was finally able to get it working. Shaping the clay on the wheel was difficult, it kept cracking and I was having a hard time keeping it together. I just did my best to follow the directions to make sure it would not crack. It took me longer than I wanted to, to get the desired shape and I finally just went with the end result. It wasn't what i wanted but I was satisfied. I also used my fingers, it seemed easier than using the shaping tools provided. Although it was messier. I look forward to using again and making something better. I recommend this for any age wanting to use pottery.

Easy Pottery

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The National Geographic Pottery Wheel Kit arrived today. The pottery wheel uses an AC powered electric cord. There are three pounds of air dry clay included as well as paint and a paint brush. This wheel has two speeds. I found the higher speed to be a little fast for my child. It took us several tries to complete a little bowl. Overall, it was a really fun and really messy activity!

Beginner pottery wheel

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The National Geographic Pottery Wheel explorer series is really neat and as soon as my daughter saw it she was so excited. The is 10 and she loves anything that deals with crafting. There is a little bit that needs to be put together. Nothing too hard at all. This kit actually includes a lot of things. It includes a pottery wheel, power adapter, tool arm assembly, centering tool attachment, opening and shaping tool attachment, 3 packs of air dry clay, 3 sculpting tools, 1 cut off tool, sponge, brush, palette, apron, 6 colors of paint, assorted gemstone chips and a learning and instruction guide. When we put it together it took us a little bit to figure out how to put the clay on the machine but in all my daughter did a descent job with it and had so much fun trying to make a clay pot!! It's very nice that it came with paints so that we could make different designs. I received this National Geographic pottery wheel set in exchange for my honest review and we absolutely love it and would highly recommend it for anyone that loves crafts. This will keep the kids entertained for hours and have something super cute to show for it!!

Perfect gift for an 8+

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Clearly, the manufacturer designed the product to be user-friendly. The instructions booklet is well-written with accompanying graphics. Our 10-year-old quickly assembled the unit and then prepared the first batch of clay for use without requesting help. The unit operates with minimal noise and enables the crafting of multiple clay models. Her sisters requested custom-made containers for various uses. Granted, it's going to take our artist some time to ‘mold' her skills, but she is nonetheless excited about creating personal masterpieces. The product requires a focused mind and dedicated hands. Kind of the same as a video game controller but with this set, the participant has something tangible at the end. Highly recommended for all ages.

Such a cool product!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The National Geographic Pottery Wheel is pretty cool. I tried it with 2 of my boys and it was messy and fun. It does have a tool that attaches to the wheel that helps you form the hole in the pot. I prefer to use my hand since it's the original way pottery is made. It comes with 3 packages of clay which is more than enough to make 3 or more pottery items. It comes with a learning guide and instruction book that are more than helpful. Pretty easy to follow instructions. I love that the clay it comes with is the air dry kind and doesn't need to be put in the oven.

Great project

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My kids (ages 7 & 10) really enjoyed this pottery wheel set. Everything is included with this set. It requires a power adapter (included) and I thought the cord for the adapter is a little short so you'll need an outlet nearby.

This set includes 3 lbs. of clay which is quite a bit and more than enough to create various projects. Tools are included also. The apron included is rather cheap, my daughter already has a rip in it.

The clay itself takes some practice. We had quite a bit of trouble with it cracking. We attempted it with the wheel 4 times because it is important to get it to the right consistency. If it's too dry, it will crack when using the wheel, too wet it's hard to mold. My kids seem to get really frustrated with using the wheel because the clay kept cracking and they'd have to start over so they ended up sculpting the clay with their hands. My daughter made a clay jewelry holder which turned out cute and then painted it and used some of the gemstone chips to decorate it with.

This was a fun activity to do on a cold, snowy day. My kids thoroughly enjoy arts and crafts. This kit isn't that messy either. We laid down a towel so cleanup was easy.

Fun for kids

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Neither myself or anyone else in my household is an artist or experienced with "throwing" clay. I've seen the movie Ghost, and this was nothing like it. So, I figured that since it was an 8+ age product, that we'd be totally fine. For reference, my twins are 11 and I act their age, so we're all equals here.

The one major snag in our experience is that the directions didn't *exactly* state how the arm attached to the base, so when I attached the screw part to the arm, I didn't attach it BEFORE I added the holding screw, so when I fit it into the base, it was too tall to touch the clay. But in my defense, the directions didn't specify. I'm sure nobody else had that problem in setup, but I'm mentioning it because I was getting frustrated thinking I had to add a lot more clay to get it to reach but the directions recommended only using 1/4 - 1/2 a block. I might add that 1/4 to a 1/2 block is really a small amount of clay and the only thing that I could even remotely get to shape was a bowl probably only large enough for a dollop of ketchup. But I failed at even doing that properly.

The second snag is that the table spins a little too quickly for me. If it had been a slide speed switch rather than just a two-setting switch, I think that would have been a lot more helpful. 

Thirdly, all of the nooks and crannies in the arm and tools made for a longer-than-necessary cleanup. If the arm and tools had been smooth, then washing it off with water would have been a breeze, but the clay got stuck in EVERY little possible place. I don't think I'll ever get it completely clean. But I also don't believe we will ever try and use it again, either. Bummer.

I can see how this could be fun. I really do. It was just not fun for any of us in my experience. Just too messy, too sticky, too aggravating. 

I really believe National Geographic missed the mark on the instruction guide. There could have been multiple more photos included to show how to do things. The tools were almost useless for us. The only one I could get to do anything remotely acceptable was the ball-end tool. The others were too small. 

I think that including a carry bag would have been super helpful as well. Everything fit back in the box, yes, but it took some creative stacking and stuffing on my end. 

I love that other families seem to have had success and quality time with their kits. I just wish we could have had fun, too.
