This edition does not contain the bonus scene I was looking for. There are multiple editions, and I read online that the paperback edition contained the scenes previously only available in the B%26N exclusive edition. That is not this paperback. It does feature a gorgeous image of Alexis, but that is the extent of new material. 

Review of book: 

Blood of Hercules is set in the future, but it features ancient characters. At first, this book felt like a gimmick. It is a good story. It features a unique magical system and dystopian future. I initially thought the story would have been just as good without trying to shoehorn old character names into it. It seemed that Jasmine Mas had used mythological names for visibility purposes. Retellings of myths have always been popular, never more so than now. 

This isn't a retelling, though. It's not even a reimagining. Mas has taken old characters and put them in an entirely new world. The essence of the characters remains true to form. Kharon is the Ferryman who cannot be escaped. Patroclus and Achilles are a couple who have never been interested in anyone else until they met a certain beauty. Achilles is a warrior. Patroclus is the person who handles him and interacts with others on his behalf. Zeus is a controlling douchebag who is concerned with his own power and populating the realm with his own offspring. Hades and Persephone are the power couple, and Hades keeps Zeus in line as much as anyone can.  Hercules is "filthy powerful," but not entirely sane. 

That's where the similarities to stories we've heard before end. These are not the same people. This is not the same world. 

The humor is dark and twisted. The romantic entanglements are, too. It's hilarious and disturbing in ways only Mas can do. 

Alexis Hert is a rightfully depressed homeless waif who is just trying to make it to the next meal in a world designed to make her existence a neverending misery. Then she takes a mandatory test that reveals she's a member of a powerful race of godlike people, and she's thrown into a world that's even worse than the one she's known before. Alexis wants to lie down and give up, but she endures in spite of herself.

Fans of the Cruel Shifterverse series will recognize Mas's unique ability to create interesting, broken FMCs who suffer and break but never stop putting one foot in front of the other.
