This is my first book by this author but I definitely will have to rectify that. I love that this story was based on truth, my favorite kind of historical fiction. The characters are complex and of course being smart is one piece of that personality. Iâm not the brightest star in math, it takes me a little bit but the codebreaking and math was an interesting thing to read about. Oh to be as smart as Margot and to help with the war must have been amazing, those that are brave enough to get in the middle of it. Margot and Drakeâs story will touch your heart and keep you awake. If you are like me youâll want to pray for them. Danger, inspiration and romance fill the pages of this wonderful story! I love this quote âDo not neglect your prayers, Drake. Neglect your chores, neglect your ablutions, neglect your mother, but never neglect your prayers. They are what root you to the Lord." 
Donât miss this historical romance that was written by a wonderful author!

I've loved Roseanna M. White's characters in each one of her books.   I think, however, that Margot might be my favorite character of all. Margot is an unusual heroine.  She has a genius-level intellect.  Her obsession with mathematics and numbers leads to her looking at the world from a different viewpoint from most of us. She's somewhat socially awkward which makes her even more endearing.   It was fun watching her develop a romance with Drake and discovering that she did indeed have feelings as well as logic and could fall in love.  Drake won my heart when he started courting Margot in a way that helped her see how much he valued her unique gifts.  

There's mystery, suspense, and tension that builds all throughout this story.  As both Drake and Margot race towards danger to save their friend and thwart an attack on London, I could hardly turn pages quickly enough.  Don't miss the author's notes about her research for this story. I found the history behind the real code breakers fascinating.  I also appreciated the faith aspect of this story. Both Drake and Margot find that even when circumstances are desperate and hard to understand, God is always there in time of need, waiting for His children to turn to Him for help. 

This is such an intriguing and inspirational story.  If you enjoy Christian historical fiction, you'll love this one.

Another great story by a great author

Roseanna M. White will always astound me as an author. How can she depict a different world in each novel? Read several of her books to understand the genius behind her words: every story is unique and her thorough research is obvious!  Such talent!

"The Number of Love" is the story of a young lady who uses numbers to make decisions, find peace, and make an impact during the Great War. Margot De Wilde's unique code breaking ability is vital to Room 40's successes, but life is not always as simple as following a code. She finds friendship with a new secretary, Dot Elton, a would-be-recluse, and the adventures they face together are life altering. Dot's intelligent and witty brother, Drake, is caught in the middle of a dangerous mission abroad. If he isn't successful, who can stop the impending danger?

Margot and Drake's story has numerous thrills and more surprises than I was expecting, but what else would a book of codes and spies necessitate? If World War I stories, witty repartee, and a side of love excite you, then pick up "The Number of Love"!

Codes, Love,

This is such a one of a kind story.  Margot is unlike any heroine I have ever read before.  She is beautiful, brilliant, and doesn't want to get married, at least not any time soon.  She is completely oblivious to the looks men give her, and thinks she didn't receive any of her mother's beauty.  Working in a field dominated by men, she has learned that life for a smart woman isn't always going to be easy.  I loved seeing her interact with Drake.  Unlike Margot, Drake moves easily throughout the world and social situations.  The chance of the two meeting and getting to know each other is slim, but sometimes God has a way of changing things.  This book is full of mystery, romance, and loss.  I was taken to another time and place and enjoyed every moment.  I couldn't imagine my home being taken over and being forced to flee to another country for safety.  White painted an amazing picture and I wasn't ready for the story to end.  I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Romance.  I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers and was in no way forced to post a review. Roseanna White has yet again outdone herself. I don't know how she does it, but her writing becomes more intense, more gripping, and more lyrical with each new book and series. I thoroughly enjoyed the Shadows Over England series and love that some of the beloved characters from that series have roles in this story between Margot and Drake. Of course, we met Margot in A Song Unheard (book 2 in Shadows Over England) as the quirky younger sister of the world-renowned violinist Lukas De Wilde but this book can be read as a stand-alone, without having read the previous series (but I highly recommend that you do read the series if you haven't yet). 

So knowing what a fantastic storyteller the author is, the wait for this book was agonizing....but so worth it. The deliciously fast-paced suspense, mystery, and secrecy of espionage in this book far surpass what I remember from the previous books. The fascinating and clever dialogue that is the author's trademark is taken up a notch.  Roseanna White has a way of creating unforgettable characters and she has indeed gone above and beyond in introducing Margot and Drake to the world. Margot thinks in numbers and relies on methodical calculations and logic to face the world of loss as WWI destroys everything she holds dear. She's a very different kind of heroine with a unique voice that comes so clearly across the pages.  Drake is an injured espionage agent who has survived on instinct and fearlessly takes on Margot's intelligence to show her that emotions and feelings are not enemies but something to treasure. His devotion, maturity, and selflessness make him quite swoon-worthy. And there is a villain with a voice that sends chills up my spine whenever I think about him!  And, of course, there is that gentle spiritual reminder in this book that “faith isn't just feeling. We have to know He's still there, unchanged, even when we can't feel Him. When the grief's too loud to let us hear His voice.”

Now I am in my agonizing waiting period again for the next book to be released so I can revel in Phillip and Arabelle's story!

Fantastic start to a new series!

What I love about reading a book by Roseanna M. White is that you get a good, solid book.  It's well-researched, the characters have depth, and there is an interesting plot that pulls through until the end.  No fluff. 

Margot De Wilde, whom we met in a previous book, is a fascinating character.  Her mind thinks in numbers, and her communion with God is based on numbers, as well.  She is most comfortable being "one of the guys" at work, so it was interesting to witness Margot expand her circle of friends.  Drake Elton was an amazingly well-educated, caring, competent, and dedicated man.  He served his country faithfully, and was an all-around great guy.  He figured out how to speak Margot's language, which was no small feat.

The mystery and intrigue surrounding the spy network during World War I makes for an interesting story line that keeps the reader turning the pages.

Those who have an interest in World War I and those who enjoy historical romance will certainly enjoy this book.

Amazing WWI Fiction

The Number of Love by Roseanna M. White is the first book in her Codebreakers series. World War 2 has always interested me. So, a story about a female codebreaker during that time in history was a must read. Ms. White did not disappoint. She wove such a wonderful story along with facts, and history that I couldn't put the book down until it was completely read. Margot De Wilde loves numbers; they speak to her as a friend. She is recruited to help the Admiralty in Room 40 as a codebreaker. There she meets Drake Elton, an agent in the field. Together they must solve the hardest puzzle of their life. The way Drake was able to empathize with Margot was great. He didn't try to change her, he just loved her and encouraged her to be herself. No pressure, just take all the time she needed.  I don't know how Ms. White was able to write such an outstanding book about numbers. I would never have been able to keep it all straight. This story has everything you could want for in a fiction story – London, spies, suspense, intrigue and of course a sweet romance. I can't wait for the next book!

A WW1 Codebreaker

There is much to like in this first offering of the new The Codebreakers series set in WWI England. The Number of Love is filled with interesting characters, some I liked more than others. Drake Elton is one I very much like. He is a protector by nature with a determined personality, a sharp wit and is not afraid to take risks. I loved how he cared for Dot's wellbeing and was sensitive to her anxiety issues, always showing kindness and patience. Some may think he was being overprotective but who knows you better than a sibling, right? Only in this case, it took someone who doesn't relate to others well, thinks in numbers, and shows very little emotion to enlighten him to the strength that was within his sister.

Margot De Wilde is like no young woman Drake has ever met. A friend of Dot's, she has the ability to look at people and circumstances unencumbered by emotions. Margot was definitely a character I had a hard time connecting with but people are worth getting to know. It takes time and patience. Not everyone has the ability to verbalize their feelings. It's much harder for some but it doesn't mean they don't feel. You have to put aside self and enter into their world, looking for ways to connect with them because in the end you will find a person who very much feels things deeply and has incredible insights on life.

White is adept at drawing detailed word pictures and always has me believing I have been transported back in time and place. I enjoyed the book and recommend it to fans of historical fiction and especially those who want to know more about The Codebreakers in Room 40. I especially enjoyed the author notes at the end of the book clarifying what was actual history. I want to know more about this time in England's past.J

I wouldn't normally do this but I emailed the author to ask her why she chose to make her characters Catholic and she graciously answered me saying that in Belgium during this time, something like 98% of the people practiced Roman Catholicism. Margot is from Belgium and it was easier to make the Elton's RC as well, in order to avoid the whole “Can we get married, belonging to different churches?” question.

Solid beginning to a new series!

One of my favorite historical series is Shadows over England by Roseanna M. White. I have been wanting to read Margot's story since we were introduced to her in A Song Unheard, book 2 of that series - which you do not have to read first. This book is the first of her new series called The Codebreakers.

I knew Margot would make such a unique character because she thinks a little bit differently than most people. She thinks in numbers. She looks at everything like a mathematical equation. I really loved her character because she was so different. And Drake was just perfect for her. I loved their banter which started the moment they met! I loved how Drake used the way Margot thinks to court her! It was so sweet.

I also loved this quote because it's so true and it's so easy to neglect your daily conversations with God for life's daily routines, “Do not neglect your prayers, Drake. The history in this story is done very well. I love how Roseanna uses real history in her plot elements. She writes in a way that I felt like I could picture everything that was happening. I also thought the secondary characters really added to the story- including the bad ones!

Great start to a new series!

My first full length novel by Roseanna M. White, this certainly won't be my last! From the very first page this is a story that weaves intrigue and wonder into a world of order, formulas, and patterns. Each character comes alive in their own right, but we see them filtered through the unique view of our analytical heroine, who sees life through a maze of numbers that mean so much more than their numerical value. I loved Morgot's style! I loved her logical manner, efficient way of life, and the beautiful way she looked at the world around her. I loved the natural way God was woven through the story.* The plot was such a simple yet complex web of dates
