While it can be used for draining lettuce berries spinach or other food copperware this attractive is often used purely for decoration so it comes with a protective coating that prevents tarnishing. It LOOKS like copper but it's thin plastic film that eventually peels off into your food and sink.  Never would have bought it if I had known it wasn't a true finish.
