Ozark Trail Tailgate Wagon Review — Around $100
I paid around $100 for this wagon, and I really wanted to like it because it has some genuinely useful features, especially the tailgate. However, after using it and looking closely at the construction, I have several concerns about the structural design, durability, and repairability.
First, the carrying instructions don't seem to match the wheel design. The instructions show a particular way to carry the folded wagon, but the wheels on that end are the swiveling steering wheels. They don't have a locking mechanism to keep them straight. When carrying it according to the instructions, those wheels pivot freely and make it awkward to handle. I actually found that carrying it in the opposite orientation allows the wheels to behave more appropriately.
The tailgate is a great idea, but it needs more structural support. I love being able to open the end for large or awkward items. However, the rigid/foldable bottom piece doesn't extend across the tailgate section, and there is no obvious reinforcement supporting that area. If you have a large object weighing around 100 lb spanning that opening, I would have concerns about the structural support underneath it. The wagon may be rated for 225 lb overall, but that doesn't necessarily mean every individual section is designed to support that weight when it's concentrated in one location.
My other concern is how cheaply some of the components feel constructed. The handle and, particularly, the attachment point where the handle connects to the wagon feel very lightweight. There are several points that seem vulnerable to wear from repeated pulling and use.
That brings me to my biggest issue: repairability. Some of these connections use rivets rather than removable hardware. If a connection eventually wears out or breaks, there doesn't appear to be an easy way for the owner to replace that individual component.
For around $100, I don't expect an industrial-grade wagon. I do expect it to be reasonably durable and, when something eventually wears out, repairable.
Use bolts, nuts, replaceable brackets, or other serviceable hardware where possible. Don't make the entire product disposable because one inexpensive connection fails.
If you're going to make something cheap, make it repairable. Cheap doesn't have to mean disposable.
There are some genuinely useful features here, and I can see the wagon being very practical. But I would like to see improvements to the wheel design, tailgate reinforcement, handle attachment, and overall repairability.
A $100 product doesn't have to be perfect. It should, however, be designed intelligently enough that the owner can fix it when something eventually wears out.
