I have used Penn products over the years and have always had good luck with them. I was in the market for some new gear for next fishing season. I do a lot of catfishing (anchoring, trolling, bumping) and i need a reel with plenty of power to bring in the big ones. I always shop and compare  (quality/price) when thinking of buying. The Penn Rival has to be the best value for this type of reel. Its strong, light, made with big gears and carbon drag system. I prefer a dog system over the Anti-revers bearing and this reel has a double dog anti-reverse (double !!).  It is easy to clean and maintain.
It is built as good as any reel of this type cost 4 times the amount. The quality and price of this reels is great deal to any fishermen.

Recently purchased this reel to put together a heavy combo for catfishing at the dam near me. I really have to say this reel seems to be a very solid and really well built, especially for the budget price point it comes at. It has filled the duties it was purchased for extremely well up to this point. Casts smooth and overall just feels like good solid equipment when I use it. I do have one beef with this reel I have to put out there that I feel Penn needs to adress. When I cast out, on a fairly regular basis and particularly when i try to put just a little extra in the cast, the eccentric lever will auto engage itself abrupty and somewhat violenty causing bait to fly off and often my line to snap sending my tackle flying. Super frustrating. I'm not talking about muscling it really hard by any stretch. Just slightly harder than I might typically cast. Really needs to be adressed because it inhibits my casting and barring that issue I know this reel would be capable of casting quite a bit further if needed. Fix that issue and it's a 5 star for the price point.
