This grass grew under a pecan tree where nothing but weeds have grown for years. Even my neighbors bought some to grow under their fruitless Mulberry trees and it grew where nothing grew for countless years! These pictures are where the grass came back to life just weeks ago after this winter. We got the biggest bag $68 for 40 or 44 pounds. Well worth the money and we bought a second bag this year for the back yard!

I live in middle Tennessee, northwest of Nashville. I planted this seed a week ago (mid March 2021) and in 8 days it looks like this!  It came up best in the areas where we threw down seed then tossed a little recycled potting soil from a pot we were getting rid of.  Its also coming up great in the areas where I worked the soil with a rake and then tossed handfuls of seed.  I also spread it all over using the spreader on the suggested setting to beef up the lawn. Its really hard to see what is happening with that yet.   Im fixing (yes we talk that way here) to buy another bag or two now that I know it works!    Nothing worse than spending $50 on a bag of seed that does nothing!  This works!

I planted this seed a week ago on my bare spots!

I have been purchasing Scotts grass seeds several different ones the past 3 years, and my lawn looked good the first year but had a lit of spots.  This year I purchased 2 bags of this brand of seeds.
My lawn is coming in and it is gorgeous.
Thick and green.  I will be using this brand from now on.

I have a full green lawn and not even  2/12 weeks yet.

Two mistakes that people keep making when they plant grass seed, including me; after loosening the soil of the ground you’re going to plant the grass seed on, cover the grass seed with a thin layer of light soil. After you water the seed, keep it moist or wet until it is well established; 3 to 4 weeks. i’ve used Pennington K31 seed for many years and would not use anything, but, especially for the very good price.

The seed covers a good area, and the grass has a nice coarse texture. Once it starts growing, it's impressive how well it holds up against drought and helps prevent erosion. In my opinion, the instructions for planting were clear and easy to follow, making the entire process straightforward.

I've bought this grass a few times and once it eventually sprouts it's such a beautiful shade of green and looks great! However it can be a bit tricky to get it to sprout. It can take several weeks or more sometimes. Under perfect conditions it will sprout in a week or so. For me, early spring in March seems to give the seed the best opportunity to sprout and root-in fully before the summer heat hits. It's good to rake the seed into the soil a little bit, or even mix it with some soil before planting it.   Otherwise, the seed can tend to dry out and then it won't germinate well. Once it finally sprouts and roots-in well the grass is very tough and holds up to foot traffic and heat well. Don't mow it too short the first few mows and it should be good to go.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue Grass Seed is an ideal option for our plant growing zone. It grows well and stands up to dry hot summers and hard clay soil. It goes dormant and returns I the spring and thrives and reseeds itself. The Pennington package was difficult to use. After cutting across the top with scissors, the bag tore down the side. I had to put it into a large ziplock bag to keep the seeds from spilling out. Be careful when opening. The seeds are easy to spread either with a spreader or by hand. They stay in place nicely and the birds don't eat them. After some time with rain, the grass grew well and filled in some bare spots.

Good seeds, poor packaging

The bag was clearly left outside in the rain weeks before I purchased it. The top quarter of it was grass sprouts that were mostly dead. I was only able to use about three quarters of the bag.

This picture is of the seed being down for over 3 weeks in moist soil with plenty of sun. Not one piece germinated. A total waste!!!

Planted this product the 1st of sept 2025 have not seen any germination of seed yet what so ever. Purchase it from big box store. It is now 1/23 still nothing! Water 2-3 time daily as directed per manufacture. Planted some left over different brand seed , it's doing fine about 3" tall now , very disappointed with your product!
