McFarland Cub Scout Pack 53 uses round weights to get their pinewood derby cars up to the proper weight.  Before the cars are cut out from the block of wood, three 3/8" holes are drilled in the back of each car to the proper depth to accommodate the full length of the weight.  A bolt cutter is used to remove pieces from each weight until the weight of the car, wheels, and axles are at 5.00 ounces.  Using pre-drilled holes in the block of wood allows the Scouts (both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts) to not have to worry about adding weight on top of the car if under weight.  

special note:  3 weeks before the derby we have a car building session at the fire station where the Scouts learn how to build a car that will finish the race.  We also have an open class for adults ...

Go the Distance with the Proper Weight

Worked great! My son won 1st place twice, 2nd place twice, and 3rd place once. 4th place overall out of 20 kids. Easy to use and clear instructions

Got these for my son's pinewood derby car.  It will help out to get the right weight for the race.

Good price

Rapid shipping, product came exactly as described and is excellent for pinewood derby weights.  These are much more cost effective than tungsten and with the convenience of their shape I think they're much easier to insert into the car and use.  Super highly recommend!

They work as described. They definitely don't just “snip apart”, lol, took me 5 min with an angle grinder to cut these to size

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The three weight rods weigh just about an once each. (Some package pictures had more than three.) The photos show what look like individual pieces stacked in line but they are rods with grooves cast in them. You will need a hacksaw to shorten them. (If they were actual button-cell sized, you would keep them away from children.)  They are not attracted to a magnet; probably just die-cast material similar to model cars, but they would hurt if thrown.

Non-magnetic model car weights.

Relatively easy to use and accurate. Good price.

It is three solid weights that have to be cut if you want to actually put them where they need to go in your car build to be competitive. If you don't mind cutting these will do the job and are otherwise an ok product.
