Got this smoker for my husband as a gift. He wanted a Traeger but this was a more affordable alternative. Husband is very happy with his Pit Boss. It has the features he was looking for, works perfectly, looks nice and is a nice size. Plus, like I said, more affordable than other brand names.

So far this grill has been fantastic. I have read the negative reviews and am keeping an eye out for those issues. As of yet I have nothing negative to say. The ability to slide the heat plate and sear is great! The only negative would be I had a burnout on second cook. However that was only due to me not cleaning ash pot. Now I clean before every cook, hasnt happened since.

Great budget pellet smoker!

The pit boss classic is my first smoker and I should have purchased one a long time ago. The quality of the grill is really good. Assembly is easy. Cant wait to try many different meats and recipes. Dont forget that the former owner of traeger now works for Dansons which makes pit boss grills.

Awesome Smoker!

I have had my pit boss for one week now and have cooked on it twice. So far i love it. What i wasn't happy with was the way it was handled in shipping. When i received it all 4 legs where they are to be attached to the grill were badly bent. I had to heat them and bend them back in shape so I could attach them. Great deal for the money, I wouldn't buy one under the 700 sq in cooking surface though.

The Pit Boss is a great deal for the money.

I've been wanting a smoker for years.  I never got one, because it didn't seem practical to sit with a smoker, tending to it and adjusting for temperature, for hours on end.  Then I heard about pellet smokers with electric temperature control.  Found this Pit Boss for an excellent price at Walmart.  It is simply fantastic.  Assembly included attaching the legs and the shelf - everything else was in one piece.   Just add wood pellets and plug it in, run through the initial setup steps, and you're ready to rock.
 I've been smoking like crazy ever since I got this.  I don't have to babysit it at all.  The wood pellets (which are available in different woods) are burned to create the heat and smoke. 
I'm not a huge turkey fan, but I thought I'd try it. Smoked for 5.5 hours at low heat to get it to temp.  It was fantastic!!  And I just used salt, white pepper and onion powder, and no brining.  Very simple.  Pellets I'm using are PB Competition blend (hickory, cherry, maple).

I'm loving this smoker

Very solid and fairly easy to put together. Followed instructions and did initial burn off the day I put it together and was smoking meat the next morning (chicken and sausage). Going to do a Boston Butt this weekend and I cant wait! I highly recommend this smoker. Get yourself a cover for it to keep it protected.

Great smoker for the price

My only knock, and continues to be a problem,  is the packaging / shipping of heavy items. The grill arrived damaged, but functional. Although Walmart and Pit Boss did not handle the actual shipping they control how items are packaged for shipping. Being in an e-commerce society, items need to be packaged to handle the shipping event without arriving damaged. The last thing a consumer wants to to do is repackage, load a 100lb item back into a vehicle, and then return because of damage. Or maybe they are counting on that fact.

Arrived damaged but functional

The grill is together after being straightened enough to be assembled. The box showed up absolutely destroyed. Two of the legs were bent where they attach to the grill. If not for access to a bench vise they would have not worked at all. Inside and outside of the grill is scratched in several locations from rough treatment. The pellet hopper had be adjusted back into place. The grease/drip bucket was bent like a beer can. I called Pit Boss and they suggested returning entire grill to Walmart. 
I will give it a closer inspection in the daylight to decide. Did do test run last evening for burn in and it seemed to function correctly. Some cosmetic damage is ok but this was terrible.  I can't believe FedEx even left the box on my door.

Damage in shipping

My son in law has one and it is the best ever and love the food.  He bought me one for fathers day,  It was taking an extra 3-4 hrs. to cook, the thermostat read about 50-70 degrees lower than the digital.  Took for ever to cook ribs or pork butts , I called pit boss and they send me some parts but that did not fix the problem. The digital component was back ordered till oct.  I called Walmart on the 90th day and the lady said they would refund the next day and they did. I bought a new one 700 cubic inch and now it wont light. I I lit it my self and with brand new pellets.  I turned it on today and it kept running but no fire. I lilt it my self and its working but it was 390 digital v 225 that it was set at.  I think they are so popular that there turning them out to quick. I am probably going to return and get money back. I wish it worked because I love the smoke flavor.  First review I have ever written. It is what it is.

2 grilles with problems

After a lot of research, I chose this grill based on price and described features. Why pay more for the same or less features in another brand right? I once again have realized that you usually get what you pay for. I owned this grill for less than 24 hours. I didn't get to use it even 1 time.

I bought this online on a Saturday morning, picked it up mid-afternoon, and assembled it that night. I had plans for smoking a brisket starting Sunday morning. I got up early Sunday morning, drug the grill to my backyard, plugged it in, and it did absolutely nothing! It would not power on at all. Checked the outlet, checked the extension cord, re-read the owner's manual, still nothing. Started going through the troubleshooting section and immediately found out that now they expect me to start taking the grill apart and checking fuses and wiring. Getting agitated but okay, I got out the screwdriver, laid on my back under the grill, and took out the 8 screws. The fuse was intact with no issues. Plugged the unit back in, pushed the power button, and it magically came on. Great right? Nope!

Apparently just lightly touching the wires with your finger would spark the control board on/off/on/off with zero consistency. If the wind blows, this thing is going to turn itself off, or on, or off; who really knows? I'm guessing the solder joints on the control board are garbage and that is why there are so many other reviews from people complaining about this thing being inconsistent. Who wants this thing turning off on its own mid-cook on an expensive piece of meat? Who wants to go out after a few hours and find cold, raw meat on the grill?

My unit also only came with one temperature probe even though the Pit Boss website says it has two.

Threw the whole thing in the back of my truck and promptly returned it. That brisket is in the oven now roasting; not nearly what I had expected for today. I'm going to get that other brand now and happily pay a bit more. You probably should too. Too much grief buying this one.

Update: I have the other brand now and it is working flawlessly.  For $200 more it just works and came already assembled.  I also bought a wireless, remote thermometer and that's a nice add-on.

Save yourself the grief - get something else.
