As an HVAC professional I install many different rinnai products. When my personal natural vent hot water heater decided to go i went tankless. Rinnai was the obvious choice. I've had it for a couple months now and love the product. I went with the sensi RU160i as we have a smaller home. Some things I wasn't happy with were (before I installed the GTK15 recirculating system) the water was not hot at the tap as quickly as a conventional tank (the tankless has to sense water flow before it starts making hot water) so I was always washing my hands with cold water. I had to run the hot water before starting my dishwasher (which is something we recommend to new tankless customers) so the tankless is warm and ready to wash. I would never go back to a tank but do highly recommend some sort of recirculation system like the GTK15 recirc kit or spending the extra and having the RUR160i or the RUR199i installed as they have the circulation system built in. I  had my Rinnai natural gas tankless water heater installed approx. 7 weeks ago to replace an old electric tank water heater.  I am very pleased with the unit and the fact that I never have to worry about running out of hot water.  My unit is 8 gal/per hour with an efficiency rating of 95%.  I received my first natural gas bill last week.  It was so low I won't say how much it was because you would NEVER believe me!

Waht I like the most is Hot water stays hot no matter how many people are taking showers at the same time.  What I dinslike is the first users of hot water need to ket the faucet run    for about 2 to 3 minutes before water is hot.  We only had the unit for 2 months and it does meet my expectations.

It takes up so much less space it is wonderful. It takes a little longer than I had hoped to get hot water, but it's hard to tell if that is much longer than before or not — haven't received a water bill yet so don't know if we're using more water. I would have appreciated to hear more about necessary yearly maintenance before purchase.

Easy installation switch from tank

Really like the unit a lot.  It generates endless hot water on demand as advertised.  So far have not had any issues. It is not very clear on the website that the wi-fi module control is an extra cost and not included with the unit.  Also the front cover of the unit is very cheap and flimsy and difficult to put back in place.

Rinnai RU-160 Review

Ok, it's been about a month so here goes. Pros: 1) The unit is so quiet you cant even hear it when you stand next to it. 2) Takes up much less space in the basement. 3) Piece of mind knowing that I'm not heating 80 gallons of water 24-7. 4) No fear of a basement flood. Cons: 1) It takes a little longer for hot water to reach the outlet vs. the old tank. 2) Temp is set at 120 max. ( I would like to be able to adjust it more ). 3) The wifi ready requires a separate module.

Upstate H2O

I've had my unit for about a month now and it does everything I needed to do. I get all the hot water me and my family could ever want at a very consistent temperature, but it does take an extra 10 to 15 seconds longer to get hot water from the tap then my old hot water heater

Great product just a little slow getting hot water

I have only had the water heater for about a month. I am hopeful that I will save a little on my gas bill. The unit appears less likely to spring a leak and, if it does, it's containment equipment should prevent a "flood". Without the recirculation equipment, the water still takes some time to heat up. The unit is expensive and I am hoping it is efficient and will last a long time.

Cautiously optimistic

In small homes: Very little water wastage before hot water arrives. 
In my Large home: I had to dump at least two bucket full of water before it heated up, despite having a grundfos circulation pump. The farthest bathroom water temperature was never hot in winter (Sacramento!). They were never able figure out the problem despite telephone rep help and expensive plumber call outs.

Depends- only for small to medium size homes.

The water heater was preinstalled in my new home.  My wife and I were very disappointed to find that the water heater only does really hot water well, which is great if you like very hot showers.  If you want just warm water, you will instead be greeted with very cold water about five minutes into your shower.  This is apparently very common with this product, which is disappointing.

"Cold Water Sandwich"

Acquired May 2, 2019. Multiple incidents of code 11's. Unit unexpectedly stops delivering hot water, eg. mid shower. Had a service call clean sooted flame sensor and reset unit, but still is unreliable. For a 2 month old water heater this is unacceptable.
