This is the first book of the mischievous twins Edgar and Ellen who live in the idyllic town of Nod's Limbs. They like to play pranks and make mischief on the inhabitants of the town. In this story, they scheme to make money by stealing all the neighbors pets and turning them into rare beasts and selling them for exhorbitant prices. They get their comeuppance in the end though or their naughty deeds...
I bought Rare Beasts for my 10-year-old brother for his last birthday and he enjoyed it so much that I picked up the book after him to see what was so great. Even though I'm 23, I found the story engaging and fun. It was refreshing to see a children's story that was so entertaining without a whole lot of over-moralizing. It also had a great range of vocabulary that kids that age may not have been introduced to yet, in sentences where the meanings could be understood. As a kind of second mom to my brother I really like to see him learning and having fun as he reads. We have since picked up a complete collection of the books and have enjoyed reading them together. They are all fast paced and once you finish one, you can't help but want to go right on to the next. The Edgar & Ellen series in general would be great books for kids who don't like to read too. I'm glad I got my brother started on reading these with Rare Beasts. These books get my best recommendation for gifts for holidays, birthdays, etc. for any kid between the ages of 8-12.
