The Rightline Gear Sport 1 Car Top Carrier is 100% waterproof and attaches to vehicles WITH or WITHOUT a roof rack. Attach the carrier's straps to a vehicle’s roof rack or use the Car Clips to attach the straps to a vehicle's door frame weather molding. The carrier is made from UV protected PVC Semi-Coated Mesh XT and Hydrotuff for maximum durability. We first used this for a 1000-mile drive, carrying valuable (to us) family memorabilia home. During the trip it was subjected to steady rainfall for several hours and to several brief, hard downpours. We had covered its contents with a layer of plastic under the top, but apparently that wasn't necessary. There was no sign of moisture inside after the trip. We particularly appreciated that the soft structure made it possible to fill and tie down without waste space, the carrier fitting the contents instead of having to make the contents fit a strange-shaped carrier. We look forward to using this for camping equipment when we travel with family.

I bought one of these at the last minute for a trip back from Chicago with Xmas gifts and the kids. I have a sedan without any sort of rack, so secured the bag by running the straps through the car. I was able to get nearly all our luggage in the bag. The 25% gas mileage deficit when driving over 70 MPH was anticipated. Other than a little more noise in the car not bad at all. Very easy to load, very easy to secure. I did cinch down the straps each time I stopped for gas.

Lots of extra capacity.

Bought this for a family road trip. It was easy to setup on my SUV with a roof rack. We ran into a little rain, and all of our luggage & gear remained dry. Very happy with the results. We bought a different product for last year's road trip which was rendered non-waterproof on the very first day. This roof top carrier was much better! We will use it again and again. Highly recommended.

Road Tested, Waterproof & Easy to Setup On My Rack

We followed the directions on both the carrier & the reviews here. Great tips.Took a heavy load of boxes surrounded by clothing to pack it tight. Drove it over 2000 miles. No problems at all w/ weight or weather. (our stuff did not get wet in the downpour) It comes w/ everything you need. I drive a car w/ no roof rack. Great product good price!

great product

Used it on a 2,000-mile trip. No issues. Worked great. Easy to put on top and load and easy to take down. Stores nicely in the storage bag that comes with it. I have no luggage racks on the top of my car, so I used the strap-through-the-car method. I do prefer a ratchet-type strap system, so I purchased two separate ratchet loop straps instead of using the straps that come with it. I found (at my local Walmart) a 24-gallon (96 qt) tote that fit nicely in the front and two 21 gallon totes that fit the space in the rear of the carrier. This made loading very easy as there were just the 3 containers to load. With the Rightline Gear Non-skid Roof Pad, it didn't shift a bit, even with the high freeway speeds for the entire trip. This will be used on many more trips.

Great car-top cargo carrier

We purchased this carrier for extra room on our camping trip. It didn't fit our tent or big gear but we were able to pack all luggage and small items. It took quite a bit of rope for my husband to tie down you can't just put the two straps on that they show in the photo if you don't want to lose your bag on the road. All in all a decent carrier.

good carrier

The car top carrier does not look like the photo. It comes in 2x2 feet box. The carrier is capable of carrying lots of stuff such as golf clubs. However, it was hard to make the carrier has any kind of square shape like in photo. We end up putting boxes and put stuff in it. Also, it was not easy to put the strap around the carrier. It takes 2 people to secure the top. We have Lexus 570, and the gas mileage was reduced from 18 mpg to about 16.5 mpg. Not too bad.

Bottom line: The carrier is free format, but we can put lots of stuff. It was weather proof.

Did the Job BUT

Very easy to install and held much more than I expected. It definitely is not for smaller SUV's, I installed this on an 08' GMC Acadia. We returned home in a monsoon and everything was completely dry. I would have preferred for the tie downs to be metal hardware vs. plastic as i feel this will be an issue in the long run but for the price you can't beat it.

Great for vacation

Our top carrier just made it through its first trip successfully. We traveled about 350 miles round trip and it held up through some nasty wind and rain. This carrier and pretty big and fit a lot of stuff, pretty impressed with the size. The only downside so far is how the instructions explain on how to attach it to our roof. We don't have a roof rack and one of the main reasons we purchased this is because it said you don't need a roof rack to attach for the roof. Well the instructions say to connect a short strap and long strap than stap the carrier down over the top and through the doors of the vehicle. The straps are too short! I have a relative with the next size smaller than ours and they have the same problem. We both have mid-size SUV's and the straps just weren't long enough to go over and through the vehicle like the instructions describe. Luckily we got four staps withe our carrier so I had to connect 2 long straps together to get them to go over and through. Unfortunately, me relative only had 2 straps and they had to rig it on the handles on the ceiling of their vehicle. They need to provide longer straps or shouldn't be advertised to attach through the vehicle without rack.

Nice product but doesn't attached easily w/o rack

After one time use taking it out for a 6 hours drive. i have found that the corner on the back side you can see the seams where they are sew. I am really worry that if i take it out for another long drive, I'll have to pick up my items off the high way.
