The Berkley Lightning shock casting rod was created with today's anglers in mind. Anglers have increasingly turned to braided superliners when targeting bass and other species. As a result, the rod is equipped with a shock-absorbing tip that is engineered to accommodate the lack of stretch and extreme strength of a braided line, something with which traditional rods often struggle. Its tip delivers the power and strength necessary for heavyweight fights and steering big fish away from trouble with less chance of yanking hooks out of the fish's mouth, bent or worn guides, or even breaking the rod. The shock offshore fishing pole employs stainless-steel guides with titanium oxide inserts for increased durability and reduced friction. The guide frames sit closer to the rod bank to resist twisting and bending under extreme loads, while also decreasing the likelihood of wind knots and other line management issues. The rod features an ergonomic handle design with a textured rubber for a better, more comfortable grip and increased leverage.

I bought this as a Christmas present for myself. As soon as it got here I was like a kid. I  opened it up put a conventional bait caster on it and worked like a charm. So I put a spinner on it and I casted like a pro.  I never did better. 
I have over 40 rods and reels Including all the top  brands that cost  more than 3 times the price of this one. I liked it so much that  I showed it to two of my sons who fish more than I do. They loved it too, so  I bought two more ( Christmas Presents). I have only one old Berkley rod it is a two piece rod with off set eyes but it wasn't  enginered for braid . 
Now all this being said I havn't fished with it yet but plan to take it striper fishing next week depending on the weather. Wish me luck. For the price you should buy one>

I use it for walleye and catfish… tremendously strong and it looks great in the sun.. good price for what it does. I would recommend it for med/heavy fishing

I bought this rod because I like fishing in thick brush where its hard to get fish out of. This rod has done paid for itself because of the fish I have pulled out of thick areas. I highly recommend this rod if your looking for a heavy action rod.

Excellent product

I got two of these rods in heavy for the sole purpose of using them for flipping sticks.  Work great, nice backbone and hooksets.  Plan on getting a few others in different lengths and stiffness.

Great rod for the money!

I bought 3 of the 7ft med heavy. Got to the lake on the 1st hook set my rod broke into 3 pcs. I'm like, great. The other two fished very well. For the 3 day trip. I took the broken one back. These rods are light, sensitive, strong.  I found myself when rigging going to these 3 first.  Then I bought a 4th one . I have fished them for about a year. Last night I bought a 7ft med heavy spinning rod. 
Oh research this Gary Loomis did a study on breaking a fishing rod on a hook set. You can not do it, unless the rod was damaged prior.
Buy one 90% of you folks will like it the 10% most likely will buy the wrong tool for the job.

I have 2 spinning and one casting rod. After reading all the negative reviews on the plastic reel seat breaking, I wrapped all the reel seats with Gator tape. No problems whatsoever. I know that Berkeley should be responsible for improving these serious imperfections, but I can't wait for them to make a legitimate move to reimburse all of the past purchasers.

Lightweight and strong

I had bought my first rod a couple of months ago and I have bought two more sense.  Great rod.

Awesome rod for the price.  Great balance and feel

I had a heavy power rod break on a fishing trip (not a Berkley).  I decided to replace with this one as I have the older Lightning version in MH and was quite happy with it.  The problem with this one, as several others have mentioned, is the cheap plastic in the reel seat.  It broke on a hookset, rendering the rod unusable.  It may be manufactured for "super lines" but it sure is not manufactured to hold a reel properly.

I own three of these rods. I just recently got to use them over the weekend. I have a spinning rod in which I caught two smaller fish on , and a 7' casting rod which I set the hook on a decent fish but it was the first fish ever caught on it. Well when I set the hook the lock ring for the real seat snapped clean in half and my reel hit the floor , needless to say you can think how I felt after that. well after returning home I looked at my other two which like I said one caught two smaller fish and the third one hasn't even been used. The one is completely broken and after looking the other two have bad pressure cracks in the lock rings which leaves me to believe I received defected models or these were very poorly made. These rods looked really good and promising but now I'm not very sure about them. I wish I had gotten the old style now or could receive new ones in place like a warranty I haven't had these rods two months. I have tried to add a photo of it but it wont let me.

Poorly made

I had a Berkley lightning shock rod for 6 years. It was my go to rod. A work horse for everything from crankbaits to frogging, it handled it all. I thought it was time to upgrade to new one since it had seen better days. I was sceptical about the new all plastic reel seat, but I gave it a go anyway. The ring that holds the reel on used to have metal to support it, but not anymore. It split at the seam during a hook set, making the rod unusable. I am saddened by this because I used to love these rods

Big design flaw disappointing, used to love them.
